Is there a clever way to keep squirrels, coons, and turkeys out of our deer bait piles. I have thought about hanging ears of corn from limbs on mono fishing line. That would be labor intensive.

It's not real clever, but it is effective to shoot the squirrels off the bait pile before deer season. A friend of mine, Don, got this boar doing just that, with a a 22 rifle.

Don was an old guy when he shot it and older now. He shot it in the head and dropped it right on the corn pile. He walked up and poked it in the eye to make sure it was dead and it stood up. Don was about 40 yards from any tree he could climb and his blind, to get away from it. He very quickly shot it 9 more times at near point blank range.

It weighed over 500 pounds.

Don and his sons were big in rodeo. He used to frequently bring longhorn cattle and rodeo bulls up from Texas. He raised a lot of bulls for professional rodeos. I am going to visit him next week.

I'll ask Don if he knows them. Don's last name is Oberdier. He's a tough old guy and very knowledgeable. We've been friends for quite a while now.

He sounds like quite a guy when I pass that way I'd enjoy meeting both of you.

One of my friends, a guy named Dan Shriplin lives up that way some where. Shrimp is a riot. He has raised a few really good bulls to.

The only way to keep them controlled is to lethally remove them with traps and shooting. Out here the only trees of any size are near farmsteads and that makes human and squirrel interaction a yearly chore. Too many different removal techniques to start into that here but a quick search of the web will give you a starting point, We use 160 size BG with corn kernels in a wire basket on the trigger. The common V rat trap with kernels glued to the and around the pan also work. All traps need to be set and fastened above the deer brousing level. Swampwolfe had an animal powered rotating bucket that metered the corn out as it was rolled on the ground.that has some promise to reduce small critter (squirrel) usage.
