I have this Alien hanging on one of my pier legs about a foot under water- the size of a football. Looks like a giant egg sac- nothing I can identify. A quick internet search says it could be : Pectinatella Magnifica ( a form of fresh water coral). Anyone seen this before? Is it beneficial or should I scrape her off?

I don't know if it is harmful, but surely it is not beneficial. I would get rid of it. If you don't there will probably be more next year.
After looking it up, I guess it does clean the water. I would still remove it.

Zim nailed it. These colonies are rather common in this area, and are real common in any part of Northern Wisconsin I ever hung out in. I've seen them in the waters around Rhinelander that were 3 feet across. They are nearly always found growing on sticks and etc, like the limbs from trees that have blown over and fallen into the drink. They have that coral looking pattern on the outside, and will be a clear soft-but-solid jelly inside.
P.S. They are a natural and native organism. They are not harmful and there is no need to remove it.
