Are raccoons and skunks in competition for territory? Mostly curious about urban areas.

We've had our first skunks in our neighbourhood in years. At first, I thought that maybe they've found their way here naturally, were pushed out of their habitat by development, or dropped off by an ADC who relocates. But now am wondering whether removing the raccoons who were causing damage to our property opened up a 'safe zone' for the skunks to move in.

Thoughts?

I suspect they're pretty tolerant of each other in urban locations. At least it seems they share the same garbage attractants where my daughter goes to school.

Plenty of both here seem to live side by side. Probably compete for some of the same foods but not all

Saw a skunk, a possum, and a barn cat eating out of the same pan at the same time. They all seemed pretty tolerant of each other. grin

I also think that they are pretty tolerant of each other.

Like Chas, I've seen possums and skunks eating out of the cat food dish on the porch while the cats sat nearby and watched. When coons come around the possums and cats clear out but the skunks don't care. They don't bother each other.

Eh...wot?

When I was a kid, there was a black cat and a skunk that traveled within feet of each other, that we would usually see several times a week, for around 6 years. It always made me think of Pepe Le Pew.

I don't think there is much animosity between skunks, raccoons, opossums and cats.

Doesn't seem to be any relationship to it being here and the temporary absence of raccoon, then.

Thanks for the feedback!

Some disease might have came through. Were the raccoons pretty think before they disappeared?

Had a trail camera setup over a bait hole last winter........was monitoring traffic to see what was out there.

One video caught a skunk minding his own business, when a coon came in from the side. They were nose to nose before either knew the other was there. Coon spun around and put his tail in the skunk's face and backed him out the way. Coon inspected the goods, passed and moved on. Skunk still there looking indignant......like "what the F bro"?

Coon, possum skunk and fox.....time stamp had them all there almost at the same time. Seems like they all get along fine.

No. Raccoons were thinned out by some trapper in the area who got tired of them pulling battons off his shed, using the back fence as a latrine, and digging up his lawn (earthworms, not grubs)! wink
