Every one is different and when they find something that works they seldom change much but here are the things I do: 1) I prefer exposed traps with bigger pans (DLS work best) 2) On a trail I find a post or tree. If not I plant one. 3) Up the post 18 to 24 inches (I am not trapping kittens on purpose) I smear castor based rub lure (Bob's Nub Rub, Sierra Mist, lots of good choices) facing my trap side only. 4) I finish it off with some visual up top, something loud dribbled onto the top of the post (There are Tmen who are adament I am doing that wrong) to get them close to the set. Once at the set instinct takes over. The cat wants to rub his face and the side of his neck on the lure and gets caught.
I do all kinds of goofy looking things- cats dont care. I use a dab of urine between the trap and the post. Sometime deer stomp it. If they do I add basically jump sticks to move them away to the other side of the trail as they pass. I go completely nuts blocking in my exposed pan so there is no other place to step. This is another place a DLS works best. I put shorter sticks between the springs- nothing ever goes on top of a spring. If I have feathers or duff I scatter it. I used to use egg shells but it attracts the trash. If I use a food lure near by same thing- way more skunks and possum.
The basics are a post with lure high enough for the face and a trap below the lure. The rest of this is stuff I experiment with from time to time but my thought is that I have never once found where I spooked a cat away. They are brazen and have no fear of the trap, my scent, or goofy stuff like CDs or Christmas tinsel blowing around. If you have a bunch of smurf or JI Joe figurines put them all over- I do not believe the cat will shy away and if anything he may stay there long enough to notice the castor odor that he apparently cant resist.
Go have fun this fall- find a catty looking trail and put out a bunch of sets. You want a few spread out on the same trail IMO to hang up the trash so there is an open set when the big tom rolls by

Enjoy the vacation and be careful with that picture. If someone isn't convinced that you grow bobcats to enormous proportions they might accuse you of being Jtrap sized LOL.
Great advice too I think. I am far from subtle when the cats get prime.

I like to find a trail and narrow it down with a couple of clumps of broom sedge. Add some duck feathers and put some skunky/castor lure on the grass about 12”-14” high. Sometimes you get this Nice.

She's a looker for sure. I always figured letting some females go was good for next year and how ever many years a female continues to have kittens but then I have never trapped in a state that told me I couldnt keep them either.
