Nova Scotia,
I see alot of threads by young guys just starting out and I wanted to give my advice. So here's my 2 cents worth of advice to you young fella's..Stop over thinking things so much..., I keep seeing posts about, what's the best for this or the best for size for that.....over time if you set up and pay attention in class you will learn alot from the experienced fellows on here... But in the meantime,LEARN YOUR ANIMALS, AND LEARN NATURE. The best knowledge any trapper can have is knowing their quarry And knowing the nature around them. And that doesn't just mean about learning about the animals, but also how they act in YOUR trapping area(that's a main tip). For example when I was a young whipper snapper I used to read all the articles in fur-fish-game and various other places about setting traps for coon and mink in culverts... I learned the hard way, that just don't work around here just for the reason mink and coon don't travel through culverts IN THIS AREA...if you need advice about tips or tricks, there's lots fo experienced guy's on here that can teach you anything from defusing a bomb to doing brain surgery... but the main thing is get out doors and learn the animals

Great advice woodtick. I would also add, join your state trapping association, the NTA and the FTA. Go to a few conventions and set in on some demos. Keep your ear to the ground and LISTEN when you are around people who know what they are talking about. You will be surprised at what you can learn just by hanging out and listening. Find a mentor also. There's nothing like the knowledge gained by going on the line with someone who's been at it a while.

Nova Scotia,
That is a great tip pcr2, there is such a wealth of knowledge out there in this digital/cyber age that a trappers mind can get messed up pretty fast. Keep It Simple Stupid

Everyone wants to pioneer some kind of special set. Simple works best, and has for years.

Step one, setting traps in the ground. Good to go. Experience will slowly be gained over time. Knowledge is not gained over night. Learn to look around and see what mother nature shows you. Enjoy yourself and don't get caught up in the numbers game. Take pride in what you do and how you do it. Respect your environment.

Thanks woodtick that’s good advice. I try to keep my eyes and mind open everytime I go out. There’s always something to learn when you’re in the woods or the swamps. It nice to read up but it’s all theoretical until you actually get to work.
