I got an electric winc and plan on using a rope looped around the hide of coyote that is loose. The rope will be tied to an eye bolt in the bottom plate of my garage wall. How high up in the rafters does the winch need to be installed?

I don't know why anyone would want the winch on the floor in all the muck from the fur shed, taking up floor space, and then run it through a pulley to slow it down even further, when you can easily hang it up top out of the gunk and out of the way and run the line straight so you can speed things up. This also allows the hand control to hang nice and handy. 11-12 feet up will get most all but your very biggest coyotes in a single pull.

And I don't know why any one would go through all that hassle of mounting the winch In the air.
Mount your winch about 4' off the floor on the wall then mount the snatch block In the rafters. You can actually build up some 4X4s above your rafters to gain even more height. It's a lot easer then screwing around hanging the winch. And a lot safer.
How long Is your control cable? If your winch Is 13' In the air your going to be reaching over your head to get the control cable.

Yes that Is a very good option.
Mount your winch on one end of your work bench and your critter tie down on the other end. Mount the winch bout 10" higher then the bench top so you can turn the critter.

There are advantages to mounting the actual motor high or low. I mounted mine high and a disadvantage was that I had to cut and splice the wires to the controls. The wires to the controls on those harbor freight winches are pretty short. But mounting it high, I did not have to build a bracket to mount it on the wall or build a box around it to keep clean either.

Looks good flipper.

Beav its just as easy to mount in the rafters out of the way as on the wall or floor and my hoist is 13' up, the handle hangs right at shoulder height. Runs twice as fast as a doubled line too.

I lengthened my hand held control and added a foot control for the option of hands free usage. Both work great with the winch at 13'.

My whole set up Is on a mast anchored to the floor the winch sets about 5' high on the side of the mast. No messing around hanging the winch.

That winch was a 12 volt winch I have since replaced It with a 110 volt winch.
