My Mistake. M42 would be for the Spindle Gouge. Looking to make the metal handle system. Like this here.

Would this be difficult to make ?

For woodworking?

If so, I'd go with something like 4130, something you can work with yet won't deflect too bad on wood.

Yes i see now, A Robert Sorby handle. yes it can be made ,pretty simple all but putting on the rubber grips. But for seventy ish dollars at wal mart .com. i could not buy the metal ,make one and ship it for that. the first robert sorbys i think were made from a 3 cell maglight and the attachments were build for the end.

That's where I get my tool steel from for my machine shop. Had them give me a quote on it. Hope that helps you out.

Used to handle 10 ft bars of that stuff in the 70's. Place I worked made end mills out of it!! Never realized it was that expensive!!

Yeah pretty pricey stuff that's why some times its hard to keep my kewl when one of my operators explodes a end mill due to ignorance. I'm sure he could find a lower price but none the less going to cost alot.

Now anymore 90% of my tooling is carbide again not cheap but cuts better and lasts longer cutting powder metal parts.
