Fleshing never seems to work out for me like it does on videos. I have a beam set up I made with a curved fleshing knife.

On videos the membrane on coyotes always seems to flesh evenly and easily. When I do it my hides get shredded. I've tried using the sharp side but mostly use the dull side and try to gently plow and separate it. If I don't use more pressure nothing comes off or moves. If I use just a tiny bit more and get it to move it usually tears right through the hide. It seems like there is no perfect sweet spot in between. I've tried just about every angle and level of sharp/dullness. My fleshing beam is smooth and hair is combed free of any stickers or debris.

What's the deal with this? I have no trouble with deer, but coyotes and badgers are getting destroyed left and right. Even when I try pulling the membrane off it seems like the hair roots are exposed.

How many coyotes have you tried to flesh?

My first 100 beaver and coon were a learning experience. If you lean into the knife and press real hard with the sharp side of a Necker 600, you have the nicest hole you ever saw in just a minute. If your shoulders and hands are tense, stop, give yourself a 10 count. If your beam angles are not right, adjust them. The goal is to do a season, flesh the fur, retain some value, and not be crippled. Hope this helps.

What brand fleshing knofe are you using? The cheap $12.00 knives will not cut it.

Looks like the hide is pretty dry. Are you fleshing soon after skinning?

Get a good knife flesh them while their fresh. I chill mine over nite in the fridge. First few will be a learning process. Learning Angle of the knife and pressure are your first things. Next is when and how to slice and when and how to push. Everybody has had to learn and has made mistakes. Relax and try not to be tense

The hide in your picture is way to DRY and I would also believe your pushing to hard directly down on the beam. Listen to "Turtledale"s" advice.

Looks like your order might be messed up, flesh before drying. The meat is not even pink of fresh looking. Skin it and flesh it or skin it and put it in the fridge for a few hours, then flesh it and put it on a board, fur side in for a few hours and then turn it fur side out and finish drying it.

Coyotes don't take a lot of fleshing. Skin them warm and flesh with a Necker or other quality knife using the dull side. Get the fat off and the membrane from the upper 3/4 of the hide. Don't worry too much about the lower section if it the membrane won't come off. A 10 minute job for me and I am not particularly good at it. Coon can wait a day to be put up but get at your yotes as fast as possible.

Ive never fleshed a pelt that was brown like the one pictured. It looks either about freezer burnt or like stated above too dry. You need a little natural moisture on a pelt to get the flesh rolliing...

My best advice is skin it and flesh it right away, I'm not even sure what that is in your first picture

I’ve seen that on opossum pelts before. Never dried out like that but the outer layer of skin “popping” off. I’ve always chalked it up to leather not being prime. The outer layer comes off and exposes the roots. You can see the difference in thickness where it happens. Toss them right in the fat bucket when it happens. Doesn’t happen very often but I have seen it.

Has that hide been in a pickle? Are you in the process of tanning? Like others have pointed out it doesn't look like a fresh green hide.

Looks like it was salted and then he tried to flesh it. Like a deer cape that was salted, but the deer cape would need to be rehydrated in a pickle bath until it was soft enough to flesh.

Considering the brown to dark brown color of that pelt leads me to think it could possibly be in an advance stage of rot when you fleshed it.

I can't tell what I am seeing in the picture. It looks like an old brown and white of either the moon, or some desert-scape?
