Watched a buddy shoot a big feral hog with one at 50 yds and it hit him like a truck.

I have one, CVA single shot. Only shot a box of shells out of it so far. Shoots great out to 200 yds, that's the farthest we could shoot. Only killed paper so far, got it for an elk hunt this fall.

hope ya mean SINGLE shot cuz a signal shot doesn't need to be that big Mushy.
and ya dint tell us your intended quarry
but,
They hit hard and are great for everything in NA, cept griz..(but it'd probably work fine with a 250 grainer)
I've seen several elk and muley and black bears and whitetails and moose, hit the ground cuz of the Whelen.
I built several on Mauser 98's back in the 80's.
Pete even took the head off a squirrel with his, so his got named the camp small game rifle....lol.

one of the guys that comes to camp with us has two one semiautomatic and one pump both Remingtons i think he uses 250 grain has whitetail deer and black bear and moose. His grandfather got him using the 35 Whelen in the big woods. we always give him a hard time about the big gun and he's a short skinny guy. we call it Little Big Mans Disease.

Only issue I found was is not every store carries the bullets. Im going to reload so I wasn't really worried about it too much. Just don't expect to go into a big box store and buy shells, but most small shops around here have them or will order them for you.

I ended up with a Remington 7600 pump in 35 Whelan when my dad died. I think I would prefer to have it in a bolt action. Don't really have a use for it but I take it out and shoot it every now and then. I reload for it so it stays in the rotation.

I went with a 358 Winchester for a lil less abuse on the receiving end.

I use one all the time and works way better than you would think. I shoot 200 grain X bullets I get from Double tap at 2800 feet per second. I shot some deer with a 300wsm and 180X and you can see a big impact difference between the 2. I have shot a lot of stuff with a 338 and 225x bullets so I have a reference from bigger guns. Mine is a Remington semi auto and has very little kick. I think Hornady is loading x bullets in the 35 now. I had a buddy who shot several Elk with the 35 and Nosler partitions and all were quick kills with most running 50 yards or so and all with exits on lung shots. If you are shooting under 300 yards it's pretty hard to beat. .

I love mine. Pre 64 Model 70 featherweight with a 22 inch barrel. I had it rebarreled to the 35 Whelen for a Yukon moose hunt but shoot it here for wild boar. I shot my moose with 250 grain Swift A-Frames but here I shoot Remington factory ammo at 200 grains.

I've got a hunting buddy uses one every year for Moose, Bear (grizz), Caribou, etc. He shoots 250gr. Core Lokts. Works well, usually less meat damage than my 7mm Mag. Plenty of gun for Alaskan game. I think he also got a Delta Bison with it. He shoots an older Rem 700.

I am a fan of the 35 calibers and the Whelen is a fine round. It does not have the recoil that the magnum calibers have, it is accurate and easy to reload. A 30-06 case will size to Whelen with one pass thru a sizing die.
If it were not for already having a Marlin 336ER in 356 Winchester I might consider owning one, but I would probably go with a 358 Win first.

That used to be here. Not any more!! I read some where, a 35 Whelen, in a bolt action rifle with a 26” barrel, is one alsome big game rifle!! Right below the magnums.

If you get one I have a bunch of factory ammo and no longer have the rifle.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I'm no expert but the 358 Win always seemed to be a low energy round compared to the Whelen. Why would you push the same bullet out of a .308 case instead of a .30/06 case? I never understood the preference for the 358 Win, but maybe I'm wrong?

Pete

just like 180gr bullet in 308 at 2550 and 30-06 at 2750 seldom does the same bullet going 200 fps slower make a difference in how dead the target is not at typical Wisconsin deer hunting distances any way.

a 250gr bullet at 2200fps vs 2400fps won't show much difference in game at 100 yards

the 358 is less abusive to the shooter and he is figuring 91% of usually overkill is still plenty dead

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
