Hey,
Can anyone recommend how to remove Speed Dip (and similar products) from traps? I dye and wax mine all my footholds and conibear 55/60 and 110/120 (anything larger I don't wax). Was given a a bunch of used traps and they have been dipped. I figure to change springs, put on new swivels and chains etc. But I would like to clean off any parts of the old parts that are good that were dipped.

I've had good luck boiling them with 1/4 dry dishwasher soap per gallon of water. Boil them a good long time 30-45 min at least, skim the crud off the top or boil the pot over. They have been coming out clean and ready for a good trap treatment.

All petroleum dips are a form of Coal tar (per chemist evaluation). Soaking in a bucket of tar solvent (high octane gasoline is probably the easiest to obtain) overnight and a power wash in the a.m. goes a long way in removing the coating. Save the gas to use on water traps that are dipped........................ the mike

That was always my assumption. We used to tar the roofs here, and washing your brush in gas altered the composition of the tar. I believe we used to keep the brushes in either diesel or kerosene.

If you try to wax over the dip, the wax acts as a solvent which it is petroleum based and will wash of some dip. Then you have dip mixed in your wax.

Guy talked me into dipping back in the nineties, thought I would have to sell those traps off it was a Dickens to get off.

Gas just thins it out. It'll still be on there. Boiling gets it all off, how long to boil with depend on how thick it was gooped on.

Parts washer fluid or kerosene . Both dissolves old wax and Speed Dip. Just place traps in a bucket or tub and let them soak for a day or two. Make sure to cover your container to prevent evaporation. Keep left over PWF or kero for later use. There will always be greasy parts that need cleaned or other traps that need stripped. After the PWF or kero evaporates from the traps, use a Dawn dish liquid type soap, and power wash to get any remaining residue off of traps. Even after doing that you may still smell the odor of PWF or kero. Just hang traps in a tree to let them air out for a couple of days.

I used Speed Dip for the first time on my coyote traps. They came out fine. Better than when I used dye last year. So I don’t know what the problem is. I even used the recommended amount and didn’t dilute anything. Just takes a long time to dry.
