California Releasing Almost 18,000 Inmates — Including Convicted Murderer — in Virus Prison Break

California prison officials said almost 18,000 inmates in state prisons are being released because of the coronavirus — an increase of 70 percent from earlier release estimates.

And details are surfacing about who these prisoners are, including a report issued by KTLA in Los Angeles:

Among those released last week was Terebea Williams, who served 19 years of an 84 years-to-life sentence for first-degree murder, carjacking and kidnapping.

She was deemed at high medical risk for the virus, though officials couldn’t say what put her in that category.

The Associated Press reported on concerns from police, probation officers, and others involved in the re-entry of prisoners into society that it could include “dangerous criminals who should stay locked up.”

The AP spoke to the sister of the man Williams killed.

“Why is an inmate’s rights more important than a victim’s?” Dena Love said to AP.

AP also spoke to other stakeholders:

The earlier releases also are causing consternation as probation officers and community organizations scramble to provide housing, transportation and other services for inmates who may pose a public health risk because several hundred have been paroled while still contagious.

“It has just been a total madhouse, quite frankly, and we’re doing this in the midst of a pandemic,” Karen McDaniel, the statewide transportation and services liaison between community groups and corrections officials, told the AP.

California Police Chiefs Association president Eric Nuñez acknowledged the dire situation in the state’s prisons, but said he is distressed that some inmates are being released “without a consideration for the larger impact on public safety.” He told AP that the chiefs want to work with prison officials on improving the decision-making process.

Officials said that some 8,000 inmates have been sickened by the virus and 51 have died. Almost 2,000 prison employees have been infected and eight have died, according to AP.

It's a good thing they have those strict socialist gun laws out there. Somebody could get hurt. Do you hear it ? That's the sound of snowflakes melting.

Put one of them cure the problem masks on them. If a mask’ll save us, it should save those violators.

19 of 84, will this person or any of the others have to stay in prison when they’re re-arrested? According to the radio it is better than a 92% recidivism rate for the prisoners released already. I don’t see the rate going down the more of them that are released.

so they literally have cages to put people in to isolate them . each cell could be given a 14 day supply of MRE and then stay put for 14 days in cell and then be tested and if still positive then 14 more days with 14 days more MRE.

I guess I don't understand the issue here

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Even Nebraska did away with solitary confinement. It's not fair to the brutal murderers who are too dangerous to even be around other prisoners.
Can you imagine a person who has been locked up for 19 years........trying to take care of themselves today? I saw a guy after 5 yrs for stealing a car and he could not function.

I know I'm paranoid......but am I paranoid ENOUGH???

When you start being able to understand why they do what they do be afraid. My guess it has a little to do with $. Think of the savings by releasing that many. Plus it just adds fear to this whole pandemic.

On the plus side some of them probably already have experience putting on masks.

I would like to see the stats in a year or two on how many committed new crimes.

The bad thing is they can migrate anywhere, there’s nothing stopping them from staying in california.

You bring up a good point keystone. I'll be contacting my congressman first thing in the morning to see if anything can be done to let them keep them there.

So first you pretty much disarm the law abiding folks, then you defund the police and now let the criminals out of prison. What could possibly go wrong ?? Then when the whole thing turns to crap ya blame Trump. Another politics job well done.

it doesn't have to be solitary they can have a cell mate.

think about how many of our seniors are basically in solitary right now they did nothing wrong.

it isn't life in solitary it is 14 days

what , I thought "we're all in this together" it's just a short time , "together , Apart"

it probably has lots to do with money , 18K inates at a cost of 30K a year to house and feed (probably a conservitive estimate of cost in CA) is 540 million dollars in savings to toss at another part of the failing state

when you can save a half billion on budget line x and spend it on budget line y to get what you want funded , make a bunch of new voters inmates can't vote but recently released can. AND add to the conditions that your looking for I think they want to check that box.

how this is in any way in the interest of public or prisoner safety I can not see.

but as long as everyone else is tossing out all the laws and rules and shrugging their shoulders and saying eh , covid!
