Thanks for this thread, Boco. I know it must take extra time to do the pictures out on the line.

Havent sold castor for a while, but the value is higher now than the last time i sold.
The big beaver have good castors this time of year,I would say 5 or 6 to the pound.
All in counting the smaller beaver it would be roughly 8-10 to the pound depending on the number and size of the small ones.
When I say small ones,I dont count the kits ( young of year) since they dont have castors worth pulling out.

In the picture below the grouse, is the body of water in the background caused by the beaver dam? Seems like it is by the way it looks and if so, that is mighty impressive.

Partially,hillbillyjake.
There is an old plugged culvert in about 20 feet of water,so most of the dam is a road.
Someone put a beaver deciever in the end of the culvert and in that remote location, the beavers completely plugged it its entire length, then no one noticed until it was under about 20 feet of water, and it was impossible to open even with a machine. Then the beavers continued building their dam along the roadway a few more feet.
That type of thing is fairly common on the old logging roads.Pickets at the end of the culvert work best.A trapper can open a culvert easily if there are pickets in front the beaver cannot build the dam inside.
The beaver decievers are a nightmare and cannot be opened with all the debris woven into the pagewire fence attached to the end of the culvert. [Linked Image]
Here is another one.

The date on the pic is incorrect-it was late october/early november. That is when I start on the fur beavers. Not sure of the year, likely around 2010.

Here is a pic of a beaver deciever plugged up solid by beavers-a nightmare to open by hand or machine.
It worked for a while-it extends out into deep water and is supposed to keep beaver from being able to plug it.
But the beavers start weaving sticks into the pagewire, then when the flow is restricted they bulldoze mud all over it and then the water comes up.
Once that is under deep water it is impossible to open.

I am amazed when I see how much work/damage they can do. They are fun to figure out and catch for sure.

A few shots from today.Wrapped up the big contract-two beaver a couple days ago and two today.A couple shots of a big dam I ripped open when I started the contract.I had to cut trail a 1/4 mile in the bush to this dam.It was holding back water onto the road making access difficult. The water was well up on the door of the truck driving thru on the road.I made some sets in there but the beavers had moved up closer to the road and that is where I took them out.I checked it today and there has been no beaver activity.A few shots of some other spots. The logging company is supposed to send in a shovel to clean out the ditch dams. That should dry up the road for a while.I have trapping rights on this line now,so any beaver that show up in the fall,I will take them out in the fur season while travelling in to my own trapline. Perfect country for no-see-ums knats growing in the fresh shoreline organic layer....oh wait you removed the water.

Are you able to clutch your hand on the quad's handle bars with that spear wound ?

Yea,the castor is a nice bonus. The bigger beaver all have full plump castors.
Caught very few small beaver on this contract.Kind of odd,but there is a lot of wolf sign on the roads.
