Should I make a relaxing lock and a stop to prevent the opening of the snare from closing to less than 2 1/2 inches in diameter, or a relaxing lock system with a breaking point of not greater than 350 pounds. This is required by Ohio law

As a person who makes a lot of snares my suggestion is to make both then decide which you like the best thankfully here in Montana we use lethal snares with dispatch springs in most places unless it's in lynx habitat.

You dont have to, but if you have pics of anything listed above, could you please post them. I’ve never made a snare or used them and watching videos and reading about how to do it, I’m weary about because I don’t know if they would be Ohio legal, or if it is even a good design.

The thing about Allan Minear is he can make you some snares to check out and try. Pretty sure he can meet your specs as well as those of the state of Ohio.

Depends on what your snaring. My coyote snares only have breakaways. But with the bobcat problem, I've been debating going to a 5" deer stop to self release the cats. Beaver snares, mink and muskrat snares are breakaways. Fox and coon snares are deer stopped because they are perfectly positioned to foot catch any deer moving through.

Since your completely new to snaring, I suggest you buy your first couple.

This way you'll have an example of a legal snare for your state and won't have to wonder if your homemade ones are legal.

I would rather a Release furrule in Ohio than a S or J hook

Buy 2-3 doz off of a true snarman who is also in the busniess of building costom snares.

Hight quality cable and componets are a must.

Building a snare is not like string beeds

The high volume snare manfactures do just that. They string beeds.

When figgering your time and expences the trap or snare is the cheepest thing on a trap/snare line

Cost difference between Quality and a cheeply made snares is pennys.

I would buy a dozen from Northern Sport Co or snareone.com or Rally Hess or any # other pro’s THEN see which I liked best and make the rest like those.
There are several places that have Ohio legal snares for sale if ya just look.

I run release ferrules here but some game wardens that have seen them didn't understand what they were when I told them.

You guys that can dryland snare count your blessings. Just saying the word snare without beaver in front of it in Georgia will have the GTA sending out lynch mobs.

Newt is right. Do yourself a favor and buy your snares premade from a good manufacturer, that will provide you with legal fast loaded good quality snares. Save the reusable components and after a few seasons you can attempt to build your own.

Break-aways > 2.5" deer stops

Yes! Newt is absolutely correct. And I believe if you follow this link you’ll find just that.
