Couple of things:
1. Thank heavens the perp wasn't black! There would be more things burning down since, obviously, intervention by police on a black person is racism.
2. I realize that "alleged" is nothing more than semantics here but why use the word? This clown has a knife to the other guys throat.
3. Typical of the average scumbags family, The police just went too far. He would never hurt anyone. (Except for the guy with a knife on his throat?)
4. The woman officer should do some more range practice if she is going to try and pull off shots like that. I think she missed him at least twice in the beginning. I'm glad she didn't hit the victim.

I only posted a link because the video is graphic.

Video Shows Officers Shoot Alleged Hostage Taker

Body cam footage from the Salt Lake City Police Department shows an alleged hostage taker with a knife to an innocent’s neck being shot dead by police.

Fox 13 reported that body cam video was released of a July 25, 2020, incident in which alleged hostage-taker, 34-year-old Andrew Jacob Preece, was shot dead.

Police indicated that Preece allegedly got in a fight in a grocery store with a man around 9:20 a.m. The fight carried on outside, where Preece allegedly pulled a knife on the man and held him hostage.

KSL-TV reports that one of the responding officers described seeing a knife “the size of a forearm.”

The body cam video shows two officers responding to the situation and trying to talk Preece into releasing the man. Preece allegedly refused the officers’ commands and continued walking down the sidewalk, while holding the knife to the man.

One of the officers got a wide enough view to take a shot, quickly followed by three others. Preece turned and winced, at which point follow-up shots were fired.

KSL-TV also reported that court records allegedly showed “Preece [had] a number of felony and misdemeanor cases dating back to 2005.”

Preece’s family released a statement criticizing the officers’ decision to intervene with lethal force:

We feel that the actions taken in this altercation was unnecessary. Andrew was not in his right state of mind but he never wanted to hurt anyone. He had a history with law enforcement but that doesnt make him in any way less of a person. This could have been prevented by taking a few extra minutes or hour to talk him down if that’s what it would take. In our opinion it did not look like a hostage situation, rather Andrew leaning on his friend for support because it appeared that he was is some way hurt.

“They should have taken more time to talk instead of shoot and that’s gotta change,” the family said.

family must be from another dimension. when cops get it right they should be applauded. who cares what the family of the guy doing the attacking has to say?

I agree 100%. It just always amazes me that the violent criminal is never at fault anymore. Not only do they not take reasonability for their actions, the family denies it more often than not. This guy has a sheet and felonies dating back 15 years and he was only 34yo! Apparently he has always been a scumbag. However, I'm sure he was "turning his life around" smirk

If it would have turned out the other way, the family of the guy knifed would have lambasted the police.
What a thankless do nothing right job the police have.

How true, Osky! My question is why did they not get in closer for the shot, or use a rifle for a head shot. Of course the family is always gonna stick up for their "baby", that's why he was the way he WAS! Good job cops!

The woman who took the shot did good alright. No room for error on that one and she got the job done in spite of the pressure she had to be feeling. Tough spot to be in. That lady is pretty amazing.

I don't believe there was any time for a rifle Lee. The entire episode was less than 2 minutes from first contact. No time to get an AR if they even had one. The video starts with them getting out of the cruiser I believe. As far as getting closer, I would have the fear that this nitwit would have slit the guys throat if you would have approached any closer.

Looks like she hit him on the first shot, and maybe missed on the second, hit again on the third and then who knows because both were firing. So I will take back my previous comment. wink

At that distance? Thing is if he would have killed the hostage, they'd be blaming the police for not doing more.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Blue Lives Matter.

This video clearly shows the tough calls they have to make on their own. Quite frankly , LEO's are called on every day to make a snap decisions under stress. Even a chief of police is kinda not qualified to make a life or death decision. That is best left to the man upstairs , even barely and just barely the court system.

For your average LEO to make that decision in seconds and under great stress , is nothing short of amazing plus the INCREDIBLE risk of doing it wrong with undesired results which could lead to being fired , jailed , sued and publicly shamed for the rest of their lives is a VERY tough call.

Blue lives matter. Refund the police.
