My wife and I will be flying into Boston and vacationing in the surrounding areas. Planning on driving thru NH, Vermont, some of Maine. We enjoy scenery and history. Any suggestions on places to see? We spent a week in Boston/South Maine a couple of years ago so trying to see some different areas this time. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Can't beat Maine , lots to do , many places to visit and AFFORDABLE.
See my recent thread-

New Hampshire is great for spending a buck or two. No state sales tax. Bought a bottle or two of liquor at a state run liquor store on the way to Maine.

We were out that way 2 years ago. You will not be disappointed!

Vermont- In the south part of the state look at Hogback Mtn. They say you can see for 100 miles. and 3 states if I remember right. When we were there it was hazy but you could see for miles.

HWY 100 up the middle of the state is very scenic. It has waterfalls, is full of twist and turns and great views.

If you look at it on a map and you're headed north it looks like it will take you a few hours. Wrong.

Speed limit is 55. The road is so curvy top speed is around 35 at most. But its very scenic,

NH-Head to the White Mtn. It has to be one of the most beautiful places I've seen. We were there in early Oct.

A must drive is HWY 112. In the heart of the White Mtn. park.

Many pull offs to look at the view.

Another is Bear Notch Rd. off 112 to Bartlett.

Maine- On this vacation we tried to stay out of big towns.

Stayed at a resort on Grandlakes Streams. Very nice place. Screened in porch over looking the lake.

When there we road tripped to Eastport on the ocean. Oldtime city. Had several seafood shops.

This place had a cafe with excellent clam chowder. Can't remember the name of the place though.

Then went to a lobster pound and ate my 1st lobster. 2#er for $16. Both of us thought whats the big deal about lobster??!!

If possible I would love to go back out there.

Brad

For history try Fort at Number 4 in Charleston NH. The NH lakes region is quite special but my preference is the White Mtn National Forest. Route 302 through Crawford Notch, Rt 16 through Pinkham Notch and Rt 3 through Franconia Notch are all spectacular. Stay at Pinestead Farm Lodge near Franconia Notch and say hello to my friends Bob and Kath Sherburn and their daughter Alyssa, the operator of the lodge.

The Maine coast is great but the rest of the state is not that spectacular except for Baxter State Park and Mt Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

LL Bean is open 24/7 but DO NOT BUY anything there since they are anti-gun and anti-trapping, the full mount of 2 bull moose fighting is worth the trip
LL Bean is turning over in his grave I'm sure!...and while in Freeport go to Maine Desert Park, glacial sands, 50+ ? acres

ANY lighthouses on the Maine coast

Acadia Nat'l Park

Oscar Cronks shop

Mt Washington NH...and the short NH coast has nice lil shops

You can’t go wrong along the route 2 to 302 corridor in all of those states. Go to the north of that if you want big woods, center to south for more shopping centers, etc.

I would put Rt 2 as one of the most scenic drives in the northeast.
