How are you other loggers doing in these times? Here in Wisconsin it's a tough road. We just lost a large paper mill. Other mills are running at maybe 60% capacity. The mill we lost was a big consumer before this covid thing. Probably just lost 35% of hardwood and aspen consumption. Just can't get hardly any volume for contracts. Some mills haven't bought any wood in a couple months. The small amount of volume I do get is now out to 100 miles. Which means my freight cost just doubled. I've been in this business for 43 years. I've weathered many storms. I will weather this one too. Just tough. I don't carry a big debt load. I think that a lot of the ones that do won't hold on. With the pulpwood markets this poor. It won't be long before the sawmills will have a hard time finding bolts and logs.

The market in western Washington has taken off pretty good just lately. 5"+ chip&saw Douglas fir is now $100 a ton, western red cedar $1600mbf. Soft woods like hemlock and true fir isn't great, but still profitable.

Southern Ky. logging is a bit iffy right now . guys have slowed down tremendously , i have stopped sawing logs myself. whiteoak and chestnut oak market is still good but other species are really slacking ,poplar is just a junk wood right know for us. have been in the woods less this year than ever before. most lumber processing plants are running at half capacity. cant get employees.talked to a guy the other day on a lumber deal and he said he was having trouble finding help ,he was down to just himself working, another major cabinet manufacturer was under staffed ,starting pay at 17.50 per hour and cant find help. i dont think it will get better any time soon especially if a new stimulus gos down . guess its how it rolles. thankfully i have my welding ,machining and cattle business to keep myself afloat.

I can't say on the cutting and mill side but on the growers side we are at a loss as which way the markets going. We're being told plantation pine will be getting docked after forty years of being told to plant everything to it. We long ago accepted giving away the first thinning pulp cut. And every new home going up we look at doesn't have a single 2x anything in it, all engineered everything.
We're trying to cut and plant for a market 20 years in the future they may not survive the next ten.

I work in a studmill in northern Idaho and we can't cut enough wood. We are working 63 hours a week and owners are asking us to work more O.T. Douglas fir, larch, grand fir, hemlock and lodgepole are in demand and loggers are super busy. Cedar is also high but not for studwood. Ponderosa pine and pulp are pretty much worthless. We also had a paper mill shut down and they say it is done for good. I think lack of workers is a problem everywhere. We are always short handed.
Private timber and state land is being logged hard and just as the Feds were starting to sell some timber the virus hit and they all shut down.

Right now our markets are dried up for poplar , i mean dont cut it or just leave it standing. pallet mills would probably buy some ,but the price would not be good.

I definitely think redoak will make a comeback, but it may take a few more years. most of the red oak went over seas . maby in the near future things will turn around.

Short answer is no. High dollar red oak pretty much died in the late 90's. I don't expect to see that return. Prices now are still going down on grade lumber. A sawmill guy I deal with is forced to send it to a kiln and sit on it. Sells some when he has an order. I'd just store it on the stump if I were you.

Talked to a good friend who is a contractor. Said they can't get treated lumber with such a high demand for it. Local lumber yard is doing record sales. Last month they exceeded last YEARS total in sales! When all this nonsense ends and the economy opens back up, I bet loggers will be swamped with work.

In the west there was a concerted effort to shut down the sawmills in the late '70s and '80's. What are you supposed to do with any timber you have if there is no sawmill? In my area, there are at least a billion of board feet of 12"DBH lodgepole pine dead or dying on the stump. Forest service of course won't sell a stick. Rather have it fall down and burn. We are lucky in that we have a private sawmill here. He was trucking logs from Wyoming to keep the sawmill running. There is enough dying wood locally to keep the sawmill running for decades, but the forest service will have none of it. Just you wait if you live east of MOntana, you'll be breathing alot of organic lodgepole pine smoke in the next several years.
