I was told to drink a large glass of water before every meal and one before bedtime. The one before bed is a killer, because you know you're going to have to get up to use the bathroom.I 've been doing that now for 3weeks,along with watching what I eat(some claim they eat like they always did and still lost weight)and I ve lost weight, best thing is I feel better.I also walk alot, not as much as I should be but still moving.

2 years ago I lost 30 lbs in 3 months. Quit bread, soda, sugar, processed meats, and limited my dairy. Ate eggs, lots of asparagus, lots of broccoli, chicken breasts, rice. Smoothies with plain yogurt and mixed berries.

The best thing to do is gradually switch to an all natural food diet over time that way it is easier to be sustainable. No sense loosing now to gain back later.
Natural food is food with only one ingredient on the contents label or as close to that as possible. Beans, rice, veggies & fruits, meat, fish, chicken, nuts, some pastas have only one ingredient which will most likely be whole wheat pasta.....and so on.
Then get up every day drink coffee and walk 30-90 minutes before you eat.
1# a week loss guaranteed and you can eat a lot and still loose 1# a week. No starvation diet......if you have sugar cravings then eat a lot of blueberries until that subsides. Gradually phase out the bad processed foods and over time you will be happy with the natural food diet.
.Eat more smaller meals a day......like 6-8 small meals, eat until satisficed not full.

I did Keto which is very low carb and oddly I didn't miss the sugar as much as I did the bread and pasta. I fiended for bread like a drug addict for months

It’s all about portion control period. Eat what you eat.....but reduce it. Instead of 2 twinkies and a coffee....just have one Twinkie. Same with pasta and rice and potatoes....cut it in half. Drink about 8 ...12 Oz bottles of water per day. I lost 40 lbs doing this.

The "keto" concept is VERY unhealthy Putting your body into a chemical reaction against itself?? Nope not for everyone I think you need to do a little more research. Many elite athletes swear by it. Besides significant and relatively quick weight loss I was amazed at other very noticeable health benefits including mental clarity, high and consistent energy levels, consistent positive mood, lower blood pressure, requiring less sleep but always feeling rested, zero indigestion which I'm otherwise prone to, reduced water retention and joint inflammation, after the first week or so reduced appetite and lack of cravings. Keto may not be for everyone but it's a system that works very well for me.

Dont eat yellow and white foods and sweetened drinks.
That means cut WAY back on potatoes, bread, rice, etc.. Increase proteins and vegetables. The pounds will fall off rapidly. Be prepared to get a carb craving in the evening; thats the hardest part. You will find a hundred excuses to have a doughnut or something.

I’m a school teacher for the most part. Led a sedentary life. Not much movement when teaching other than short laps around the room. 5 years ago we started a pool/hot tub business. Lost 70# in 3 months and have kept it off. I’d like to mention great things about what happened but in all honesty, was too busy to eat. I’d eat breakfast, skip lunch and drink anywhere from 12-24 beers in the evening. Drank a ton of water to keep hydrated during the service on hot days but my overall diet was poor. Had no time to eat. Reducing calories and getting active helped. Now, I run several mornings before work to keep it off.
I keep desperately hoping that one day someone will call me "Sir" without adding "please calm down" or "you're causing a scene."

When I was on Keto... it worked! I never lost the carb cravings but they were manageable. I did what was referred to as dirty keto, which means you CAN eat whatever sort of carbs you want as long as it's less than 20 net carbs per day. So I could eat 2 low carb flour tortillas (4 net carbs each) and/or a half cup of Halo Top ice cream to keep my "bread" and sugar cravings in check.
The only thing is... Keto put me in the hospital for a week and laid up for 6 weeks afterwards. It caused my large intestine to tear. The doctors said it was absolutely caused by Keto. BUT it's because I do not eat vegetables. Knowing what I know now, I think I could do Keto and be safe by taking high doses of daily fiber supplements, but I didn't know that then. When I cut out bread, and grains and starches... I cut out 100% of my fiber.

There are two ways to lose weight. Either consume less calories than you burn or burn more calories than you consume. Math works every time. Expect to lose up to 2lbs per week safely. I lost 60lbs last summer and have managed to keep most of it off. Did pick up 8lbs from Covid eating but I’m working on that now.

I read somewhere once, that alcoholism is merely an expression of carb craving. I wouldn't doubt it, at least to some degree. Try cutting out carbs significantly and you will understand the theory. Just an interesting thought while we are on the subject of carbs.

Years ago, This is the Life, from the LCMS (German Lutherans) had a program on about losing weight, using Bible sources. The way I dropped weight , I stopped eating butter on things. I drank water, instead of beverages with calories and having watched fat relatives drop 150 pounds on Weight Watchers and gain it all back, as people do get hungry for chips and sweets, I disciplined myself in snacks i got a small bowl, and when that was gone I quit. I never ate anything after supper at night, and the only thing I did consume besides water was 1 ounce of apple cider vinegar, 1/8th teaspoon of soda, and cup of cold water. An episode of House mentioned how vinegar like this limited absorbing calories. I did normal activities, like walking 2 mile a day, and I dropped weight.
I would also check into if you have a candida underlying problem, as the different species in that group like sugars and some like alcohols, and they trigger things in the brain to have you crave those things.
Also,I think it was Fur Fish Game had an article years ago, about a guy who moved to the back country of Alaska, started building a log cabin, and lost a ton of weight, because all he was eating was rabbits, no fat content. As you are not moving to Alaska to eat hares, the point is, most people can remove 300 to 600 calories in their high calorie diet each day, do normal things in burning another 1000 calories and the weight drops off. Prepare your food. Do not eat prepared foods.

give up soda , drink water ,1 beer a day limit if you drink beer. just so easy to drink your calories.
grab a smaller plate to eat from , if your still actually hungry 20 minutes after that plate have a little more but often your ok
if you normally lose when your more active , fall and winter your likely very close to finding that balance point of input vs output
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

(heroin , covid parties, ect) Lots of star athletes do stupid things !!! If you have a couple weeks I'll mention a few ! LOL Looking at the list I think a few on here definitely are on the keto 8 and 9 in particular ....LOL https://www.everydayhealth.com/ketogenic-diet/diet/keto-diet-dangers-you-need-know/

My wife went on the new Weight Watcher point diet with it you don't cut out any food group so at the first of the year I though I would try it. She has lost about 30 pounds and is just over a 100 pounds now with in 5 pounds of what she was when we got married 50 years ago .I weigh on Mondays and I have went from 202 to 161 only 1 pound of what I was when we got married I find this diet easy to stay on.

A while back, a couple of government workers, attempted to find the beginnings of "3 meals a day." They couldn't find the exact source of where this rhythmic eating pattern emerged from.
It seems most of us are really hungry once a day. Some early in the day. Some mid-day. Some late day. They both were extremely overweight but began to eat what they wanted, once a day with light grazing otherwise. Each lost > 150 lbs. in about 18 months as I recall, and returned to a more healthy weight.
I'm a dinner guy. Pile it up, but other than that, I don't care about food.
Food for thought.

In my opinion there isn't one specific way to lose weight. Its got to be something that works for you, and something that you can stick with. I count calories and started exercising regularly. I did no like the idea of removing a food group from my diet. So I can eat anything, I just eat less of it. Again, try any of the diets out there and see which one works for you, but most of all stick with it!

Don't forget the fiber, everybody needs to clean out for a healthy colon. I try to eat as much salad, cabbage, kale, spinach as I want at dinner to fill me up- sometimes its all I eat. Cabbage will do the job and is good with your favorite topping. I forgot I also take Metamucil after bad hemorrhoids and that has probably helped some.

When it all comes down to it. The best way to lose weight is to put out more than you're putting in. No secret to it. Balanced foods and exercise. It really is that simple but people make it more complicated than it needs to be. That right there is true. It is as simple as counting money, with the object of breaking even or losing a few dollars a day rather than turning a profit. Figure out how many calories you burn each day on average and set your diet to provide fewer calories each day on average, if you simply take in 50 calories each day less than you burn you will end up losing pounds. OTOH, a profit as small as 50 calories a day will end up in pounds gained. Calories used will vary with activity and with initial weight as shown here https://www.health.harvard.edu/diet...inutes-of-leisure-and-routine-activitiesif your over 55 you cant'! I'm 70 and have lost about 36# since the new year with out really increasing activity or going hungry. I did hit a sort of plateau over the last three months but am still down ~3.5# from March, think at this point I'll need to increase activity a little. My VA nutritionist insists on a full plate three times a day and is OK with two or three snacks per day. She actually encouraged me to add carbs up to a desired level. I am taking in about a third more volume with about a third less calories and haven't weighed or measured anything. She has agreed that fly fishing is suitable exercise, which influences my wife to grip less about that. I figure that if any of you is serious about losing 40-50# and keeping it off you need a lifestyle change more than a "diet", you probably should do many things, see a nutritionist, cut salt, cut sugar, cut white bread, eat green beans and cabbage, cut most fats, eat more green beans and cabbage, cut starches, find some pleasant activity other than sitting or lying down etc. and so on. Important about cutting salt is that it builds a craving that is attached to more and more unhealthy foods, you probably don't even like chips but eat them for the salt. White bread not only stacks up calories, for me at least it increases my hunger threefold, guess that's true of any sugar.

I lost about 65 pounds in the past year.
The plan is simple. Eat less and move more.
the first couple months I measured the food. Ya, kind of crazy but it works, I only ate 4 Oz of protein, 1 cup of veggies, and 1 cup of salad at dinner and lunch. Breakfast was 1 fruit and 4oz of protein. No more than a tablespoon of condiment per meal with sugar rated less than 5 on ingredient list.
Walked everyday.

Now the question, is "dinner" at noon or in the evening? Lunch is at noon and supper is in the evening. Sunday lunch is called dinner because it’s a fairly big meal after church.
My name ain't Keith

Is losing weight worth it?
In other words, do you feel better after losing weight?
Less pain?
More energy?
Do you physically feel better or just feel better about your appearance?
Keith I felt unbelievably better within days of going into ketosis. Joint aches went away as carbohydrates tend to cause inflammation. I had wierd energy all through the day and night. You don't have sugar crashes. You have constant tap of energy because youre burning fat that comes from your body instead of sugar. When i started really pushing into the intermittent fasting at about the 50lb down mark i had a boost of testosterone and human growth hormone and a wierd desire to lift weights again. You feel mentally clearer and physically cleaner because your body now has time to process the food you eat rather than just push it through. Bathroom breaks cut at least in half. Blood pressure went down. Food cravings changed, all the old things that i couldn't pass by before now we're blah and not worth it. Many Docs now getting on board as people's blood tests come back better than before in reference to cholesterol. The list goes on and on.

We've been really successful on low carb - Atkins and keto - when we do it. Both are variations on the same theme. Atkins type eating focuses mainly on low carb with adequate protein. Keto also on low carbs but with more emphasis on fats and a bit less on protein. I don't want to repeat things I've posted over and over, but I had blood work done before and after one month of low carb dieting and the numbers were a night and day improvement. Maybe it's time to revive the low carb ideas thread: https://trapperman.com/forum/ubbthr...-carb-foods-and-meals-thread#Post5909874I have things I need to add to that anyway. I am not usually the sweet tooth person, but lots of people are, and I found some keto cookie and brownie recipes that are outrageously good.

I quit drinking and went on low carb with working out. Seems to have worked a little bit just cutting out beer is probably why I lost 32 lbs this last month.

Moosetrot I'm trying keto too, it's hard to stop eating carb foods, most my favorite were high in carbs

Lifestyle change is a good idea

Does not matter what you do, or on if you don't stay disciplined to keep at it, thats the most difficult thing to do, your mind set has to be solid and your determination forward, looking back is not good, just forward, set a goal every week, not large but attainable , next month set it a bit higher, etc.
You need to use your body more so that what your eating is used and not stored, exercise or some sort of activity to raise your blood pressure a bit, not over board but consistently is better, not forever or long periods of time, this increase's your fat use.
Once your set your mine and get thru the first month, things are pretty easy to attain regularly ! It's much easier if you have a partner to push each other as well ! Good luck !
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !

I have been doing intermittent fasting for just over 1 year. I was able to shave off 50 and keep it off.
I threw my BP medicine in the toilet along with my cholesterol meds.
Haven't needed a Chiropractor since the weight loss.
have never felt better.

Nice! Good for you!!!

walking 3 miles a day is very good! 3 miles a day without missing many days would wear on most folks after a few weeks and lots of people could not do it for a week straight, they would have to work up to it gradually...walking is the best basis of any fitness program.

I read where riding a bike for an hour burns about 1,000 calories. To lose a pound you would need to burn a little over 6,000 calories. That means you would need to ride a bike about 6 hours to lose one pound. The bike riding is good, but eating less is probably more effective. A combination of both is best.

3500 calories is = to 1#. No bike ride for an hour will burn 1000 calories, maybe 500 if your really working hard....probably more like 250.
I have a very reliable way to track caloric use and 1 hr on a bike for 14 miles burns 350 calories....most people will not ride 14 miles in an hour.

Walking/running is great, but lifting weights burns more calories for a longer period of time. Doing both only speeds up the process. Weightlifting can burn calories up to 38hrs after completion. But, walking/running for 30min will burn more calories than a 30min workout, lol. I do opposite of most folks. I lift first, then get on the treadmill for 2-3 miles. Walk/run/walk/run. I get on the treadmill at about 120bpm heart rate and try and get it up to 160 throughout the walk/run. So far it’s working for me and I’m getting stronger with my lifts. I don’t overdo lifting but I’m back at the weights I was doing in my 30’s and 40’s. I don’t play around jaw jacking either. I only do 4-5 exercises for 3x10 reps. I don’t rest any longer than 30-45 seconds between reps either. I can get done with weights in 30-40 minutes then jump on the treadmill for 30 minutes or so and out the door. I will say this for anyone looking to join a gym, yearly membership prices are cheaper than monthly or quarterly. My little gym used to charge $50 for 3 months, then increased to $60. Well, I keep forgetting about the expiration date and my card shuts off after a month of no pay. So last time I went to renew I asked what the yearly price is...$180 which is $45 per 3 months. I payed the $180, lol.
