I’m setting up some Victor #4 longsprings for use on drowning rods - shortening double link chain and putting hd swivels on the end. Any recommendations on what length I should cut the chain back to? Seems like a balancing act between long enough for ease of making the set and short enough to ensure drowning. I’m keeping them end swiveled off the spring. Thanks in advance.

16 inches total with a quick link just below the mid chain swivel so I can shorten the chain to what the depth dictates. Got tired of wrestling with short chains in mud removing catches. Saw it in one of Comstocks articles, thanks Jim. More freedom to get the trap in the exact spot..

I like the longer(16" )length too.The extra length have me more freedom to work with the trap after the drowning device is set.

Thanks for the tips guys. That’s a great idea trappergbus, I’m going to set them up as pcr2 described, which will get me just under 8”, and then make up additional sections of 3 double links, plus swivels to add with a quick link when I need the extra reach to make the set.

Two swivels at Trap then 16 inches of chain which I can adjust as needed since I use a quick snap (3/16” carabiner) when attaching to lock
