So many things we describe, speak about, and throw out during conversation have historical beginnings of course. Where & when did the political description of the "left' and the "right" begin?

I think of Ecclesiastes 10:2 when I hear it, and I wonder if our forefathers described those on the left or right according to biblical characteristics;
A wise man’s heart directs him toward the right, but the foolish man’s heart directs him toward the left.

Anyone know when & where these terms started in politics?

The police are trained to look for 'tells' that indicate whether you are lying to them or not. One of those tells is what direction you glance when asked a question. The left side of your brain is where your imagination comes from, the right side is memory. So if your eyes move to the left when a question is asked, you are making up an answer ( lying) but if you look to the right, you are using your memory and likely telling the truth! So that is where the left and right came from. The leftists are liars and the right are usually telling the truth! Happy to clear this up for ya!

I'd be careful using the Bible to explain right vs left. I don't know if Jesus would have been a Democrat but I can guarantee he wouldn't be a Trump supporter.

Just what I thought.

Left and right in the Bible had nothing to do with modern American politics. It was written in a time, and for a people and culture, who would have won understood right=good and left= bad based on culture at the time. To read American politics in to that verse is to read something in to the Bible that the author did not intend.

I believe the idea of a political left and right started in France.

I bet Jesus was all in favor of folks working to help themselves.

Can't help but wonder if the French wasn't peeking in their bibles. The Kings had a Divine right and the evolutionist was opposed to Divine right, thus a not so Divine left. Kind of like a right to own a gun and if its not a right then it is left to own a gun.. We are too quick to judge whats up close to us, if you look down a set of railway tracks, up close there is a right and left, unless you are looking the other direction then it is a left and a right. If you look a mile down the tracks they go together at some point, then when you go to that point you have left and/or right again. At some point it came from the bible, but can't have God getting into it these days, can we, I mean we need no history referring to God. So you may drive a train without God, but you best keep hold of the throttle and your eye upon the rail. Hope that clears it up for ya, lol.
