I see that today the border closure with Canada and Mexico was extended another month, to September 21st. That will kill the first week of NL moose season, and with traveling time, the second week also. I got an email from a friend who guides on the Rock, said the Ministry of Health is going to make a call about restricting non resident hunting this fall. He said this season isn’t gonna happen for outfitters.

I am trying to be optimistic because our trip got cancelled too, but just think how much better the hunting and fishing will be next year after a year with no pressure or harvest.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Lots of waterfowl hunters from the US won’t be making the trip because of it.

I’m not sure how the outfitters are going to handle this. As of now, I don’t think Canada or any of the Providences have come up with a government bail out plan. Outfitters booked hunts with deposits....many don’t have that money to refund if a hunter wanted it. It’s already been spent. Here in Pa, outfitters come to the big Harrisburg show every year to sell next seasons hunts. Many lay out $8,000- $10,000 in expenses for the show. If there is a show in February this year, it’ll be a mess. Many hunters will hopefully be rebooked for 2021 season , but that’ll limit any new hunts to sell. Some hunters booked a year in advance....they’re already signed up for 2021. Many guys will be leery about laying out deposits for uncertain hunts. Some already have tickets with AirCanada for this fall, I’m not familiar with there cancellation policy.

If there’s no bailout for the outfitters, I’m sure some will go under. Good luck getting a refund in that case. Lots of guys got burned in the Big Caribou Hunt Cancellation years ago in Quebec. I cant speak for the rest of Canada, but after hunting Newfoundland 12 times, I’d expect outfitters there to treat guys the best they can.

Our 20th trip to Lac Seul cancelled. frown

We've been in touch with our camp owner, Shane. Shane has dual citizenship in Canada and the US and could cross the border, but he wouldn't dare do it now. He knows other folks who have done it and they are ordered to quarantine for two weeks when they return to Canada and are reminded that they are not to stop for gas or groceries on their way home. He said the government then puts them in a registry and tracks their banking, credit cards and other data and comes to bust them if they leave home. He knows two guys who came back and were fined a couple thousand dollars after they were caught walking down a road. He said they have wardens slowly driving up and down their roads in a way he has never seen. He also saw help wanted signs in Ft Francis aimed at hiring people to drive around and scan for any US license plates for tracking. It's creepy.

No bailout for us outfitters I can promise you that. Deposits are almost never refundable so thats not an issue. What is an issue for all of us in the business is how to move forward. Like every other outfitter I know we moved all of our 2020 clients over to 2021. We had some 21 trips already booked so had to move those guys out a year. Heres the reality we are facing. There is no doubt that we will lose some bookings due to cancellations. Guys that booked holidays in 2020 might not get the same dates in 2021, if they even still have a job. This is going create a scheduling nightmare for all of us. Now there are rumours that the border wont open until midsummer of 2021....if that happens its anyones guess as to what will be left standing. A lot of outfitters are already in trouble, by next summer a lot of them will be out of business. Every outfitter I know including myself have already lost a full years income. Although its not easy, we can live through that, but if this nonsense goes on until next summer there is no way to survive that long without income.

Good explanation Yukon.....I have hunted with the same outfitter many times for moose. He’s flown to Pa. to visit me, along with some of his guides. I’ve come to understand that outfitting for a living is a hard way to make money. He’s expanded his business over the last 15 years, buying out other camps to expand territory. Most was done with borrowed money, which means monthly payments to the bank. General liability insurances still need paid, as well as maintaining a half dozen lodges/ camps as well as trucks, Argos, generators etc. Hard to do with no cash flow.

Moose and caribou hunters from the States add about $50,000,000 annually the rural economy of Newfoundland. Guides, cooks, butcher shops, hotels, lift drivers etc. rely heavily on hunter’s dollars from the States. It’s going to be extremely difficult to replace those dollars in a land with few other options. It would be extremely short sighted of the government to not assist folks in the outfitter/ tourism industry.....as it’ll be an enormous loss of future revenue should these businesses fail.

The groups I had booked to handle north of the border this year we’re going to be my biggest year up there in the far north ie bigger money destinations. Just little me and my groups had a US dollar expenditure up there of just over 135K. That did not include misc spending, pre trip lodging, tips, taxes, fees etc. That’s just outfitters loss.
These were fishing groups.

THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA SHIFT, BUT I CALLED US CUSTOMS AND THEY SAID SEPT.30TH.Now..
I booked a retirement hunt early last year with North River Outfitters in upper BC. 9k laid down so far, another 3k in special hunting accessories,1200.00 in paid flight.
North River called to say last Thursday they may be able to classify the 2 weeks in remote hunting camps, But Customs just said i cant cross. Air Canada still has me booked and shifting flights constantly.
