Will do open water rats from the get go. I am in the process of putting together my line for the two weeks prior to our deer season where I will do dry land coon and canine in the earlier AM and my river lines later in the day.
Have done more ADC this year than most years. About 20 critters to date almost all coons only two grinners. No skunks yet.

Still waiting for the short hiccup in the fur market to be over. 6 years now. Only 2 more to go. I've seen how long the hiccups last before. frown

Probably by the second week of November I won't be able to stand it anymore. Haven't sold much fur on the "regular" market lately. Foxes that I caught in early November last year look fine once tanned.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

New to the sport here.

I have some questions obviously.

Do furs on different animal come in prime at different times?
For example, do raccoons have a better coat in October vs muskrats in the same time period?
Do people focus on different animals at different time?

In Ohio coons are better around late November and rats are great in early February

I'm a coon trapper. I hit them between the deer rut and thanksgiving here. I then hit them during their rut in early February. There's usualy a thaw around that time.

I have a couple farms that raise sweet corn for their income and count in me keeping coon numbers way down. #1 enemy of these guys is coon. They would kill them all year long just to save crops. I get to go in and at least get something of value if there is any market for coon. He has other stuff on the property too, beaver, coyote, mink. Got a cat there last winter too.
I worked really hard for 40+ years to keep relationships strong with landowners on some of my ground and I don't want to lose any of it if I sit out a season either. A few guys around here would love to move in and take over if I sit out. Also, got a kid coming back from college with a long winter break and is looking forward to running traps all day when I'm at work. No better way for him to spend his day with couple of his college buddies, right?
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Turf defending is going to be awful expensive this year. Last year was bad enough. frown
