For you folks who home tan ,do you remove the saddle and at what stage .Lets take for example afresh skinned rat that you did not stretch or dry ? What did you use the tanned pelt for after it was completed ?
You can ride a fast horse slow but you can't ride a slow horse fast .

I tan rats with the saddle on. I remove it with coarse sandpaper when finishing the pelt during buffing of the leather. Muskrat hats are light,warm,durable and look good.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

It's easier if you don't stretch and dry them first. Salt the skins for a couple of days, then scrape off the saddle, it will be easier to remove after salting. Then put the skin straight into your pickling solution.

I don't like tanning muskrats. I always tend to rip them.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.
