This is the first I have heard of it. In the 70's I killed a few coyotes at night with both shotgun and center fire rifle. Snow cover or fairly full moons were used to our advantage. Our local game warden agreed that as long as no artificial light was used, we were not bound by the ,22 long limitation.

I believe they were talking about initially requiring a $2.50 permit for this, so they can get an idea of how many folks will be doing it.
And again, it is just during the season they set for it, of January 1 - March 31, at least to start with.
I didn't listen to the meeting online or the Zoom meeting or however they were doing it, but it was on the Commission meeting schedule to vote on it today.

Why would they limit it to starting January 1st? I believe it was initially proposed as a way to help with coyote control for calving. Plus, at least to start, it would be after deer seasons, so less potential use as an excuse by someone wanting spotlight, etc. out to poach big antlered deer. In a few days, they will probably post the commission minutes on the KDWPT website and you can read all the discussion they had about it during the meeting. Probably, as much as anything, if they were going to approve it, they wanted to start with a small initial step, to see how it goes and see if folks get used to it and maybe get comfortable with it, as there supposedly were some landowner groups and county law enforcement opposition to it, at least as expressed by at least one commissioner at the previous commission meeting where they talked about it.

Personal I could do without it Why is that? I dont disagree with you. While i understand population control and using it as an effective tool for that, ive never got on board with the thermal stuff thats blowing up in popularity here. The videos i watch are almost cheating. Never saw the trucks chasing them as sport either. Guy was killed back home a couple years ago doing that. Daylight calling is a heck of a lot harder. To each their own i guess.

It's already legal in some states. I've seen both coyotes and hogs hunted with thermal. It takes the effort out of hunting. Not unlike the new fishing sonar that all but catches the fish for you.

We can use lights, night vision and thermal in Indiana and it is a lot of fun.

It’s almost a good deal. I’m glad it passed but it’s a long way from night predator hunting. I can already call at night public or private ground, kill bobcats legally even, without a light. Moonlight in the snow and a shotgun, don’t even need an extra permit. Local game warden called at night with a center fire rifle. So, they took more than they gave. Is this now the only time you can call at night? Do you have to have the permit to call at night without a light?

Coyotes are decimating the fawn crop every year, I see less and less fawn each summer which results in less and less doe to birth fawns.

I haven't seen the actual wording of the regulation, but I don't see how this would have any effect on hunting coyotes or furbearers at night if someone isn't using any artificial light, thermal imaging, etc. I don't see how anything already existing was decreased, IMO.
