Ive ranted before on this issue of timber harvesting, but it is a must,IMHO! Whether it be clearcutting or select cutting, cutting of prescribed timber harvests helps all forms of wildlife. In the forests east of the Mississippi I've saw it first hand. Deer, grouse, bear, turkey, small game, at some point in that cuts time life it benefits all. Believe it or not the USFS has employee's that are highly trained in harvesting timber. FYI, cutting timber on forest service land here in NC benefits the county schools! Up to 25% of timber sales on public land goes to the county school system that the timber is cut in. Bottom line man made habitat HELPS wildlife and aides in fire control. Look at Gatlinburg, TN a few years ago.

Nobody said it's "ok" that lives and property are lost.
It's simply nature. Tornados, floods, earthquakes, etc. are nature too. We have limited control over it or the damage it may cause. You are correct about natural disasters, but fire risk can at least be managed.

Been going on for millions of years and it will continue to do so, as it should. We burn the heck out of our farm. Mostly controlled--a few uncontrolled. I know that life and property are risked, but fire is natural. So its ok that lives and property are lost because its natural? But, it’s not natural. Smokey Bear, cleverly disguised, has lead generations to believe that wildfires are bad. The same USDA agency, USFS, goes many leaps beyond. The USFS would have us believe that harvesting timber is evil. Decades of misinformation and land control have lead to the wildfires of the magnitude we have seen in the past three decades. Let it burn......

Let it burn Policy? Yep worked real good in Montana years back! The reason it didn't work was the decades of 100% fire suppression that caused a over load of fuels and extra damage done by insects that was never cut and removed. Lots of western ecosystems are fire dependent and when we stopped natural fires the large intense were more then the ecosystem evolved to handle. Yellowstone in the 80s was the first one that started changing how fires are looked at. Then use of the esa stopped logging and removed some of the similar effect that natural fire created and you have today's big fires. Just out of curiosity who knows what the fire triangle and fire square are?
