I put up a 24 x 32 pole barn for a shop. It will be heated and I am thinking about spray foam insulation. Should I just spray the walls or spray the entire thing. I put wrap on the walls. It will have a ceiling. I am worried about it sweating.

I did 3 inches on the walls and roof and left the ceiling open. Very happy with it.

Spray the whole thing.

I built a hangar here 60 x 100 x 25 high and sprayed the whole thing. No issues at all. Just be sure that all surfaces are dry and "warm" before you spray them. You will need to do it before temperatures get too cool. We had to keep heat tapes on the barrels of foam constantly

Were both places heated? No sweating?

Open as in no ceiling or no insulation in ceiling?
White we are starting to cool off into the 50s at night. It has been in the high 70's to low 90s the last week. It will change fast before long.

The hangar had no ceiling. Metal building. We just had to be sure there was no condensation on the metal before spraying. Gave it a quick flash coat and let that set up before continuing to the final thickness. Ended up with 5-6 inches thick on the entire surface. Then we sprayed that with concrete.

The building is heated all winter and there have been no issues of sweating or anything else for that matter.

If I remember correct;y it was late September when we sprayed this one. Temperatures were in the low 40's

Your current temperatures should be no problem at all

Spray foam insulation will eliminate sweating altogether. We put a building up at a friends and they sprayed everything except the bathroom because the plumbing wasn’t done. The only place that it sweated was the bathroom. You could see the outline of the bathroom on the outside of the tin where it was wet.

We sprayed our whole house (closed cell). We have to run a dehumidifier or it rains inside during the winter.

In some climates you need an air to air heat exchanger in super tight buildings

Did you spray just above the ceiling or the bottom of the roof? Was any thing done for air flow? I don't really want to run a dehumidifier. I had a guy here tell me if I spry the entire thing it will sweat bad. I don't know what he based this on, but he puts up steel buildings.

Can mice burrow into that stuff at all? Have had problems at my deer shack looking for a solution.

Yes as can bats, wasps, bees and a whole assortment of vermin. My advice is dont do it unless you animal proof the exterior. If they can gain access they're home free.

In my experience critters do not intentionally burrow or chew on the foam just for the sake of doing it, like they do on other stuff. They do however burrow through it if you use it to plug their holes etc. If you know where their holes are, cover them with screen or hardware cloth first then spray away. I have had great luck with this stuff on everything from metal buildings to Duck blinds.

I put electric baseboard heat in mine and it was super dry last winter. Maybe the heat source in the buildings that had moisture problems was because of the heat they used. Gas or propane gives off a lot of moisture. I think you could heat mine with a match. I unplugged my freezer this summer because it was heating it up like a furnace in there, I also put reflective film on the windows to reflect the sun to keep it cool in the summer and I really don't want any sun on drying fur.

2 story, sprayed all of the walls, and the roof. Open span upstairs, geothermal (ground source) heat and air. After the first winter, I ducted a 3" line into the return, helped a little, but we fight humidity. Could be the climate, just my experience...it is super efficient though.

I will be burning corn or pellets which ever is cheaper at the time. It is going to be my wife's shop and I am sure the glass kiln will more than heat it on days she runs it. During the winter is is dry here for the most part, unless we get a east wind. It can feel pretty damp then. We had 80% humidity this morning, its down to 68% now. Thanks for the replies.

Works good except for when the tin needs to be replaced, we’re experiencing that now with our shop, when the tin comes off so does the insulation.

If your heating with wood or forced air i wouldn’t worry about humidity in the winter, both of those heat sources tend to dry things out. Especially in the winter. If the concrete is sitting on clay that can definitely sweat moisture through. I put heavy mill plastic in my heated shop and no sweating through the floor. One of my other buildings i didn’t put the plastic down sweats like crazy.
