I heard of an agronomist telling someone the best way to kill briars is to know where their growing point is before ya spray them. I'm not sure what that meant. If you do, let me know.
It might be too late in the year to kill briars now; I'm unsure when they go to seed.
A forester was telling that that they don't like shade, but I have some growing just fine in the shade.
I once heard a forester saying deer eat briars...maybe true, but I haven't noticed it.
They can be a pain if they get thick.

This is the right time of year to most successfully suppress briars with herbicide treatments. You want to cover all the leaves and stems with a systemic herbicide (like Round Up) as it will translocate to the roots at this time of year. I would disregard the notion of growing points. Total coverage of all the leaves is what the label calls for.

I've had good luck with Garlon, but had to stop because my donkeys and goats think it tastes great. A buddy in Alberta uses Grazon which is supposed to be much safer for animals.

For me, October is the best time but in Wisconsin that might be too late.

Garlon is popular here. I've never heard of it used on briars though. I was wondering if that'd work. Just cut it down & squirt it just above the soil on the cut stem. Probably not a bad idea.

Had the briars take over under 2 or three acres of grapes one year. That winter the deer ate about 6 inches of the tips off most of them. Double application of round up took care of them the next year

I put 4 acres into a riparian grass land program last year, the thistles were out of control, mowed them twice this year, hoping it is better next year.

My briars don't seem to have leaves just long stiff vine like stems with razor sharp thorns. Where are the leaves found?

Mine will. If I put the electro net fence around an area you can lay on and not get through in a few weeks to month depending on how large an area I fence and how many goats it will be nothing but a few stems any will look like you sprayed it with round up
Let ot green back up and repeat throughout the growing season and you will still see the difference between where they were and where the fence was 3 years later.

I've unofficially heard that if ya mow down nuisance plants every 45 days, it'll eventually kill it.

When you say briars I assume you mean Blackberries or Raspberries.

Now is a great time to get them.

I cut them just above ground level and put a dab of herbicide (glyphosate at 25%) mixed with a foaming agent to keep it in place.

I'm clearing areas right now and for the next couple of weeks using this method.

Trouble with mowing, if you can get to them and spraying foliage is your not targeting just the stuff you want to get rid of. Your also hurting or killing the stuff you want to use to keep the berries at bay.

If you just cut and treat the berries than everything left over will put any new berry seedlings at a disadvantage with competition form the remaining stuff.

Kill everything and the new berry seedlings have an open canvas on which to grow.

What else grows in the area that your berries are at?

That is a good question/comment. Actually, most of the briars I see has no fruit.
