I made a run down there yesterday to pick up a shaper table I bought on an auction and noticed going down though Topeka and after a GPS mess up in Topeka, I came back home though McPherson and up to York. I wondered if you guys down there trap rats or not because it looked like most rivers and creeks were dry or almost dry. The irrigated crops looked better than ours but the non irrigated was gone.

Grew up in McPherson, live in Marion (20 minutes east of Canton). Use to be guys that trapped rat in the 70s and 80s, not big numbers but were some. Now there sure don't seem to be many around but I dont know anything about them either.

Used to catch lots of rats back in the early to mid sixtys. There were rats everywhere around this area, and plenty of mink too. Both are pretty rare these days, and when I find some, I let them be. They sure seem to be headed the way of the spotted skunks!

It just hit me I ended up driving past Marion on 56 because of the GPS screw up, I went out of Topeka on old 75 down to 56 and took it to Canton, I guess it never came to my mind that someone on here would have been that close or that a screw up would have taking me that way.

We might of passed on the highway, the outfit I work has ground on both sides of highway. Coming that way I think you would of passed pretty close to several other tman members.

My plan was to stay on 70 but the GPS took me to 470 then the turnpike and I wasn’t paying the toll with a trailer and couldn’t get back up to 70 without a lot of monkeying around, I was trying to make it in one also its about 7 hours one way, when going the correct way, so it ended up a long day. Possible we did I had a red 3/4 ton dodge stainless deer guard and a silver enclosed trailer.

i suspect atrazine for the loss of rats mink rabbits quail lightning bugs big bull frogs scissortail birds meadow larks and various other wild life species disappearing around here

P.S. you should have stayed on 75 south. At I35 went west. Sign says south but your really going west. At Emporia you get on 50 west. just past Strong City take 150 west to the round about and continue west on 56. The toll road to Emporia would have cost less than ten bucks. Its about 15 minutes faster

That’s good advice Danny I should buy a new one, I think the last one I saw floating around here was from the 80’s, up here atrazine isn’t the biggest probelm here it’s hog manure, our soil binds the atrazine and allows it to break down in most cases but the manure is a different issue.

That makes sense because when I went onto 56 from 75 I ended up going down though bushhog to emporia to 150 then back north to 56 I was all over the state the way it seemed, I thought I might be seeing nessmuck pretty soon the way it was feeling.

theres a big curve on 50 before you get to 150. you turn right onto 150 but your going due west.

I spent 20 years at Roxbury which is 10 miles north of Canton. When you lay down hay there are so many birds or prey show up it looks like an Alfred Hitchcock movie behind you and that is what I always assumed happened to the muskrat and quail.

In the 90s there were plenty.

it definitely needs to be no season no limit on hawks and owls

Agreed.
Back in the day a 5 gal bucket full of 110s = a bucket full of rats about 3 days in a row and then move to the next spot and you could kick up 3 or 4 big coveys of quail on every little shelter belt around an old abandon homestead. I have always wished my son had gotten to grow up doing the same thing I did back in the day.

Hawks are tough on them when trapping them here if the hawks or eagles show up I pull out because the rats hole up or when caught I end up with just a foot and tail left, owls here are not that plentiful so they are not that much of an issue as compared to hawks.

Exactly what Danny said, no season and no limit. It's just unreal. They shouldn't be protected.

H something there was 3 trucks one straight truck was red with what seemed like a 30 foot white box on it they were windrowing sorghum I think and chopping it with a claas.

Not sure were that would have been. Seems a little early for sorghum here but some areas are a lot drier than we are right here and their sorghum is done.

It looked pretty yellow, the patch was smaller and didnt have a center pivot.
