I got rid of some sea fishing gear that I don't need in these parts and from the proceeds I am going to buy a log splitter because I feel lazy at times. I am looking at the Black Diamond 28 ton with a 6.5 B&S engine .... They don't have much other info on their website like flow rate or cycle times etc. So I am guessing on those things and Looking at other brands, the HP and tonnage are pretty similar. After my escapade with the tractor .... waiting times for nothing I think this time I'll buy what the dealers have on the lot and not wait for a delivery or I'll be ready to burn some wood by next summer.

Do any of you have this make splitter and if so, any heads up would be appreciated.

I had a post about this early in the spring when I bought one. I would recommend the 27 ton Champion. I got it at Home Depot for around a grand. It will split logs bigger than I can move. What is nice is that it can be used vertical for the really big stuff you can't pick up. I was splitting 3 foot diameter Pin Oak.

I got the 34 ton log splitter because the didn't have a 27 ton and its a beast and split all the oak and hard maple I put in it and used it in the vertical for the big stuff. Great splitter

? I shouldnt be. Im a skinny guy. It only takes a few wacks with a maul to crack a big round. Once the round is quartered you can typically split those down with an axe per swing.

Ill get an occasional knot that ill have to use the wedge but even that takes about as much time as a splitter.

Scuba..i got a black diamond 25 ton/ 9.5hp b&s...probably ran 12-15cords Thru it so far. Been trouble free, plenty of power. Motor starts up easy enough, picked it up on sale couple years back for 750$. Thats what the used ones are sellin for round here..so I'm happy with it. Cycle time on mine is 10 seconds

Not the logs I'm splitting. An axe and a maul bounce off. A wedge will sink in a half inch and then bounce out. Get yourself some pin oak, or some "green" black locust.

I was thinking that after I posted. I have straight grain oak (red and white) and maple. The oak will split if I just look at it hard enough. Its hard to chop be a pleasure to split.

I did get into elm once......never again.

This dead standing stuff is no fun to split. More so when its a muggy 90 degrees outside. Yes I know I should split firewood in the early spring and winter. I would have but had to many other things on my plate. As I am pretty much doing everything around here by myself, I little mechanical help here and there is appreciated as there is still plenty of stuff that I can put my limited energy into.

I still use a maul so I don't have any personal experience but I really like how fast these look

Scuba I don’t know what’s available in your area but we used to be able to get a splitter for the three point hitch on a tractor. I like them because it’s one less motor to maintain .

Whatever brand you buy I’d recommend one that can do horizontal and vertical, my uncle has one like that and loves it.

Heck scuba, as handy as you are I would get a length of I beam, steel for wedge, a cylinder, and valve. Build one to fit the 3 point on that new tractor and use it's hydraulics. Dad built one that ran off the tractor we used for years. I let it go after Dad passed and kick myself for doing so ever sense. He would always bring the tractor out to the woods and push brush while I cut. I now use a skidsteer for woods work and should have just converted it over to fit the skidsteer, but as they say hindsight is 20/20.

Howdy Zim, they are doing well. Your Grandpappy musta missed the east side of the state. I sure wish he woulda got all them osage orange trees, they really give a splitter a workout. LOL

They say that is the most dense wood there is Andrew. I guess his crosscut got dull.
Hope to meet up with you again some day.

Scuba, just a tiny bit of advice, never split wood larger than the missus can throw in the stove.
