If it has a Techoma run don't walk the other way from it. Had a Swisher brand with 5" cylinder that would split the nasty stuff with ease. It ran a B&S and was easy to start. It ran a belt that you could disengage to start. Used it vertical way more then horizontal. A stiff piece of plastic for the rounds to slide on makes life a lot easier.

I have a 27 ton Dirty Hand Tools brand

it works well had a 6.5hp Kohler engine

10-12 second cycle time which is about right I can have the next log up just as the ram get back far enough to get the log in , pull the handle and the rema never stops moving

DHT is out of colorodo , they were good to deal with the one time I broke something.

split all I have fed it and alot of that is some ugly twisted maple and elm

I think they get so used to it being 100+ that when it is 34 and damp they need heat.

when people say things about -30 I like to say " It's a dry cold".

Doc has me on the blood thinners now , I might just freeze this winter like I never have before

Scuba, You're very talented when it comes to building stuff, why not just gather up the items needed and put one together? I built one 20 plus years ago, mostly from discarded shop items. It would be interesting to know the number of cords that have been through it. Scrap prices are low so you can get some items pretty cheap at the scrap yard. Pick up some discarded farm implements and strip them. You defiantly have the ability, finding the time may be more difficult.

I Am still in my saw mill build and really don't need another project right now but would like to heat the place come winter. This first year it all has been a bit hectic with things that needed and still need to get done. I had a look online at cylinders and spool valves etc and decided to just get one as there is not much to be saved building one. As far as running off the tractor hydraulics ... I scrapped that idea for a number of reasons. First off I want to throw the split wood into the tractor bucket to take it to where I want it. Second thing is that the tractor hydraulics will give me 9 gal per minute and a dedicated gas engine with pump on a splitter does about twice that and that reflects in the cycle time. Putting those extra hours on the tractor just to split wood seems a bit wasteful to me but thats just a personal thing. I am fine with fixing small engines when I need to and spares are dirt cheap. last but not least. I may convince the missus that wood splitting like that is a very healthy exercise. Then I can leave her to run that thing while I do other stuff and other stuff here on this place for the most part involves the tractor in one way or another. I have about 3 cord cut for her to practice with lol

Pike River I think you should do an educational Youtube video and show us how its done. Just an hour or so long. I could probably pick up an idea or two when I watch it and learn something.

Like golf ball said get one for a three point hitch take it to the tree you cut down and split it there saves lots of time and no more engine maintenance.

I have a Black Diamond the I got last fall, newver had a splitter before, always split by hand, but the loadof log length was a knarkey mess and at 76 years old I gave in. It is a 27 ton and splits everything you can throw at it. It sat outside with a cover all winter and this spring with one pull it was running. I would not hesitate to get one.

It appears you had already thought through the tractor mounted splitter. If you is just looking to find the wife exercise get a collins-ax splitting maul and let her at it. grin
Yall quit makin fun of John Henrey, I used my monster maul and a collins ax on 45 cord of hedge and about that much other (locus hackberry and such) the year before last as I was feeling out of shape. Them was real cord not any of that face cord stuff I hear about. Never cut a stick of wood this past winter as I still had plenty on hand, but this winter I will be cutting again and likely using the mauls on all but the stringiest stuff. It is a lot faster when things are busting well and a great workout. wink

I have a super split , splitter. It is powered by a honda engine , Not hydraulic , powered by 70 pound flywheels. Cycle time is about 3 seconds. I like it. They are made in Maine. There are quite a few video's of them in action, on u tube. It will keep 3 guys busy , one bringing blocks. one splitting . one piling, split wood. I usually work alone, so must be Superman.. old243

I'll see if anyone around Knoxville has one of those Black diamond splitters on the lot for pickup and get one this weekend if they have. Up until now I have always split my firewood by hand and will probably do that as well when I feel like a bit of a workout. But to get ahead of things right now, A splitter is the way to go I think.
