Some of you fellas back east probly know some answers. I've heard horror stories about big landfills being opened under obscure names and such, then abandoned when they're full and the locals get left to deal with it. Around here some garbage gets hauled a couple hundred miles. Ogallala NE gets garbage from Wall SoDak. That's a long haul.
I've heard garbage gets hauled out of the big city on railroad cars.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Eventually everything winds up in the ocean.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Built pits for scales and a scale house at a dump just outside of North Little Rock several years ago. They used the methane off the dump to operate their facilities.

I met a guy from Minnesota that did that. Takes a mighty big landfill to make it work though. Cliff Meussen or something like that. He also owns ethanol plants.

A lot of our landfills here are closed and capped off , methane is harvested from them now.

Some of the trash is sent to a incinerator to be burned for energy. There is also a place that separates recyclable stuff and burnable stuff , then there is stuff that is loaded onto rail cars to destinations unknown. I would not doubt some of it gets sent out on barges to be dumped at sea. Don't know where it ends up however.

I’m quite sure that isn’t true. At least in the US. Maybe it is true for Canada.

There’s a big dump north of I 80 near Penfield, Pa. Lots of 18 wheelers hauling from the East (New Jersey ?) and dumping there. Many of the drivers are foreign nationals, barely speaking English. I’m not sure how they get a CDL.

Twenty plus years ago near Butler,Pa, a Bosnian guy hauling garbage hit a van with a family of five, killing everyone. He ran a stop sign, had a CDL from Utah. There was a big investigation as to how he got a DL.

I know some of Milwaukee's garbage was used to make a huge ski hill in a neighboring County years back.

3,000 Tons of NYC garbage per week, gets hauled out to the Waste Management landfill in Chaffee, NY. That's almost 500 miles from NYC.

Twenty Years ago the State of New York wanted to open up
a big landfill east of Lake Ontario on the Tughill Plateau Aquifer.

Local people fought it for years but It got approved anyway.

90% of the garbage comes from New York City trucked in.

Now the Landfill is full and they built a 2nd one besides it.

It is already taking garbage and you guessed it.

All of it is from New York City.

Bad deal for the rural residents around here.

Our small local landfill that was supposed to last 20-30 years is full now and luckily the county shut down its expansion plans when it started taking portland trash at a very high rate. There is more than one way to deal with the cities -- either starve them out or back up the other end.

The day will come, and not too long from now, when all those landfills will be mined for the "waste" resources buried in them.
