Hey all, I have a potential situation where I need to traps some beaver around a dock. Water is deep, steel breakwall and 330 will not be an option. It got me thinking about snares. It also got me thinking that I want any beaver stone dead right away as the area is residential and a live swimmer on a leash would attract unwanted attention, so... Any merit to using senneker style dispatch snares to put them lights out fast, or is that a bad idea?
Just happy to be here.

There is no access under the dock, it has a fascia that is now deep under water because the lake is at historic high water. People built their docks when the water was 2' lower and are now paying the price LOL. I may just skip the job if I can't figure out something stealthy and simple. I don't have any snares experience really, because they have only been legal in water here for a long time and beaver were basically non-existent until about 5 years ago. I do plan on using them where appropriate so I'm trying to learn. We also just got cable restraint legal here but that's a different post entirely
Just happy to be here.

Ive never had good luck killing any beaver with snares and I'd say 95% of the jillions (pretty sure thats a big number ) of beaver ive taken were snared. If they get one little front leg in the loop you catch them for sure but they won't be dead. They don't have much for a neck to start with and they are tougher than nails. A snare on drowner was best option I found. Got to secure the snare to get a good bite first then when they swim off they work their way down the drowner. Short snares absolutely a must on drowners, and some fairly deep water. I snared one by tail and got a good drowning on it because water was just deep enough to keep its nose under. Think length of beaver, length of snare, that has to be minimum depth of water to keep em under. Good luck and keep us posted. Interesting challenge you have there.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

It's certainly a bad idea in Ontario unless you're wiling to use inhumane trapping methods, risk fines and losing your trapping licence.

Crit, what would be illegal with an open water snare? Have I misread the regs? My understanding is snares are ok in water. I haven't found any language aside from the requirement for the snare to be in water.
Just happy to be here.

Unless there's been a landmark change snares have only ever been legal under ice. If that's changed I missed any sort of announcement and I don't miss any of the publications. Maybe someone associated with the federation will see this and chime in. Boco?

I had also assumed under ice...but then I read the applicable reg and it only said submerged. I think I'll email the MNR for clarification

I've often thought I'd like to be able to use snares for nuisance work when you have an educated animal and no depth within the Municipalitie's ROW to set drowners. Even if it meant acquiring permission for specific circumstances and having to be prepared to dispatch at daybreak.

Sounds like the spring is a bad idea ... I'll wait for a response from the MNR

Beaver cannot be snared on land(live holding snare) here.Regs say underwater and that means on a positive drowner in open water according to the clarification I got.I use them underwater(open water) on a snare pole occasionally in drowning sets. This is always in deep water. Of course under ice is how they are used here 99.9% of the time which is a very humane method to take beaver. I have seen beaver snared on land in summer-they dont last long if they cant reach water, they die quickly from hyperthermia from the heat.(big struggle and dark fur=death).

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Thanks Boco. I'm getting a clarification from the CO regulation specialist this week. Never had any intent to hold live I want that critter stone dead ASAP and was just wondering if a kill spring would expedite the process. Sounds like a positive locking snare, set to entangle deep or run down a drowner is the solution if legal

I have neck snared several beaver with my coyote snares that had kill springs and they were still alive in the water when I checked them the following mornings. You might put the snares on a drowning slide wire with a heavy weight (30# +) on the deep end . You could attach one end to the dock and just hang the slide wire with the weight on it over the deep water if it can't be staked there. If the snare has to be completely submerged I am not sure what kind of a set you could make there over the open deep water. Look into the float set with a 330. The beaver would be DRT and would sink out of sight. This would be my first option if legal.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

I am wondering, if the kill pole is also the anchor, how far should you figure on driving into the bottom? I am nervous that a critter could pump the whole thing out of the bottom.
