Does anyone on here, I like to hear about things from trappers, have any experience fishing from a pier for redfish? Last time we went down we used just our everyday monofilament and I lost two when they got into the pier. My wife had a big one she landed but the line just kinked and coiled up after the fight. It stressed it pretty badly. Re spooling our rods and from what I can find out braided monofilament is the way to go with a braided fluorocarbon leader. Is this the way to go? Thanks.

Braid, monofilament, and flourocarbon are three different things. Your main line can be either mono or braid, everyone has their preference. Either will work. Not sure what size fish you’re talking about, so tough to say what size line to use. To the end of your main line, tie at least a 3’ flourocarbon leader. Again, fish and structure determine the lb test you should use.

If your line kinked after fighting a fish, its from constantly reeling at the same time the fish is pulling drag on a spinning reel. When they run, let them run.

The fish can run bigger, bull reds they call them, I was thinking 30 lb. mainline. Fluorocarbon leader I’ll use. I’ll tell her about letting them run. I do remember her reeling, or trying to, on a run so I’d say you’re correct.

Yeah, that’ll twist up any line. Its most apparent with mono, but all line will twist. I like mono for most things, but assuming there’s a lot of wave action against your line, thinner braid would probably show bites better. 20-30 lb mainline and 40-50 lb flouro leader seems about right. Though thats not a type of fishing I’m real familiar with.

Not sure about from a pier, but we use PowerPro 30# test and a 15-20# fluorocarbon leader and have caught plenty over the slot limit on the flats.

We use 6lb mono diameter braidI’d bet it’s somewhere in the 25lb range for our popping cork rods and 40-65lb braid on our heavy dead bait rods. We fish deadbaits at night on Owen lupton rigs with 3-4oz weights and 80-100lb mono leader snelled to an inline circle hook. We’re catching 30-65lb drum and bringing them in as fast as we can to ensure their survival. Here’s a picture of a male I caught a few years ago(and 60lbs ago). Caught him on a popping cork rig in 15’ of water casting to menhaden schools. Take a look at what he left on my right leg. That’s what they congregate in the lower Neuse River to do that gives us a chance to catch them in numbers.
