Anybody besides me have a low platelet count?
Had my annual physical this morning. Blood work showed I have a low platelet count. I've had it for about 5 years now.
Is there any cure for this problem?

I give a triple unit of platelets every month so my count is very good and has been for the 15 plus years I have been giving platelets. Do you have any of the low platelet signs such as frequent nose bleeds, easy bruising and slow clotting cuts or wounds etc.? I don't know the remedies for working on increasing platelet counts but I am sure there are some.

My wife had low platelet count and low white blood cell couunt. She was referred to a blood specialist Dr and was diagnosed with an auto immune disease. They told her there is no way to fix it and they would monitor it every 3 months. She kept getting sick because of this so my sister did some research with her all natural Dr and he told my wife to start taking a product by Standard Process called immuplex ans one called congaplex. I thought it was all snake oil but told her to give it a shot. After 6 months on it her counts were back to normal and the Dr was confused and asked what she did. My told her and the Dr just said oh I guess I'll only have to see you once a year just to keep up on it. She's been on those pills for 3 years now and her counts have stayed in the normal range ever since.

I have a low platelet count too, mine was running around 40,000 for the longest time. It’s supposed to be around 100000. I did some research online to see what to do to bring my counts up. I did a little test and started taking Folic Acid supplements. With my last bloodwork my Hemotologist was amazed at the higher counts 80000 to be exact. I told him what I did and he told me to keep taking it. There is a name for this disease it’s called Thrombocytopenia aka TCP. Google Thrombocytopenia and see how drs try to get rid of it. It’s risky business I wouldn’t want to try it.

A guy I know smashed his finger and it wouldn’t really quit bleeding so he went to his doctor found out his platelet count was low due to leukemia, had treatment at mayo and doing fine now so my point is to watch those things as it can get something worse.

My low platelet count is because I have Non-alcohol related cirrhosis of the liver. Or as it's known more commonly now Non Alcohol Fatty Liver disease.

My 88 year old father is currently here at home on hospice battling the opposite situation with platelet counts of a million having been reached. This is due to a blood mutation known as Jak-2. It's really perplexing because his mental condition is a roller coaster from very sharp (his normal condition before a recent femoral fracture) to very confused. He is currently on 1000 mg per day of hydroxyurea as treatment and it seems that some slight improvement has been realized. The big problem is suspected micro-strokes that have caused a regression in recovery of his injury and prevented any physical therapy progress. While I'm taking up people' s time I'd like to vent about so called Medicare advantage plans. If you care about the elderly people in your life, at open enrollment time this year make sure that they are Medicare part A and B enrollees and Absolutely NOT part of a so called advantage plan. These companies lure participants by offering discounted prescriptions and other goodies like free dental insurance. But when you really need long term care they show their true colors by constantly pushing patients down levels of care aggressively and unjustifiably. If that worm on the hook looks just too fat and juicy a smart fish will swim by!

I don't often get nose bleeds, but have had a few. I do bruise easily. I was in the woods killing buckthorn. When I finished, my arms were bloody.
Someone told me B-12 was a solution, but after a year of taking it my platelet count went down. I might try the folic acid grayfox mentioned or the supplements Cgritter mentioned that his wife tried from Standard Process.

7, I dated a woman after my first wife died, that had that problem. Dr's put her on prednisone and every time she went to the dr, they would change the dose. Count go down, they would increase it, then slowly wean her back down. What a mess. If you have ever taken it, you know the reaction to it, Bouncing off the walls on a high dose, gives a whole new meaning to "extra energy"! I would avoid that treatment if you can. I can't remember what the disease was that she had, but has pretty much whipped it with time. Good luck with your affliction!
