Very cool,Gulo.I have only ever found four.I must not be good at hunting them. All were exposed,on top of the ground.Three adults and one juvenile..The adults all had the usual scars.Quite an interesting snake.Keep looking Sharon. You will find them.

Ole - Close, but no cigar (this time). Hypsiglena torquata is night snake, while rubber boa is Charina bottae. Found another large adult today. 630 mm (almost 25") total length. Panther Creek just above the main Salmon River. Found a few bullsnakes today as well (gopher snake, bullsnake, Pine snake, are all common names. Pituophis catenifer (formerly Pituophis melanoleucus)).

Gulo, that is one cool looking critter. Are they a constrictor like the boas that I am familiar with?

Yes Andrew, they are constrictors. As Taximan pointed out earlier, the tails on larger snakes are covered with gashes and scars, as the snakes often raid underground mouse nests, and while they are constricting the young mice, the snake buries its head amongst the coils, and uses its tail as a "club" to fend off the attacking adult. Thus, tails are usually beat up pretty good.

I wondered after I posted if I was sticking my neck out a little too far without checking first. Thanks, Gulo.

How far up panther creek?Did you get to the forest service cabin just above the clear creek trailhead? I helped put that bridge over panther creek to that cabin in about 81.

I went up Panther about 35 miles from the mouth. Ran out of time about Forney. Got sidetracked up Moyer and Porphyry Creeks as well. Quite a few bighorns along the road, as well as an apparent recovery in the chukar populations along the Main Salmon below Shoup. Once I hit Panther Creek, I saw two other vehicles all day. Nice!

That tidbit makes them sound even more awesome. There are some truly magnificent creatures in the world that most folks never see or know about. Thank you so much for bringing this one to our attention.

Gulo, I've seen quite a few rubber boats down my way. Just looked up some pics I took of the last one. It was Aug 24th. Little guy.

I've found a handful of rubber boas over the years in Washington. Mostly on the east slopes of the Cascade Mountains. I found one on the west (wet side) also. The difference I noticed is the boas from the east side were usually more of a brownish color whereas the west side ones were definitely green.

I brought one home for a pet once and called a herpetologist at a local zoo. He was quite informative, he told me to feed it baby mice, but that some won't eat in captivity. He said if it didn't start eating within a "reasonable" amount of time that I should turn it loose. I asked him what a reasonable amount of time was; he said six months to a year. I was shocked, I didn't want to wait around that long raising baby mice, so I took it back where I found it and turned it loose.

They are a very cool and docile snake, and I am not a snake person.

How cool, Taxi !

Yes I look for the pupil in snakes of any kind, every time.

I'm jealous !

I will find one someday....and Jack and the world will hear me when I do smile

I believe in touching , holding them too. Other snakes and gator lizards have become so tame with me after I catch them several times .

Love those photos !
