I had the itch to shoot and I had never dropped the hammer on this old gal. 1953 Winchester model 70 Featherweight in 308. I grabbed a box of whatever I had for ammo and shot 1 three shot group. I admit that I have trouble seeing sights but it may be fun to drag this one out again in November and try to make some meat with it.

25 yards? Heck, I can't see THAT far. Didn't you notice the powder burns on the target?

Those old Featherweights are beautiful. I had one years ago in 257 Roberts. One of several I kick myself for letting get away

You know, if you drop that rifle in the bog a couple times, then get a little beaver P on it, it would probably tighten that group up a little.

I love my old 70's. I built my Whelen from a featherweight, and have a standardweight 270 that shoots sub moa, even though the barrel has lots of copper.

Once years ago in CA I got to see a guy's collection that was mind blowing. He had over a hundred model 70's, many new in box and he had all the calibers ever made and some from the custom shop.

Great guns.

Pete

Beautiful rifle-have never owned a Model 70 but have a keen interest in buying one these days.Handled a fancy one the other day and found it quite heavy so I am going to try to find the featherweight version rather than the super grade.I really can't stand the "Tupperware" party going on out there right now for rifles and even shotguns-wood stock are so so much nicer than the plastic crap everyone is putting out.

Yep, the SG's are heavy but most have amazing wood on them.

I am also big fan of the older Winchesters. I have a 308 FW like yours about the same year here is my favorite a 270 SG FW, not too many of these around.

Funny thing, the Featherweight I built my 220 swift from was originally a 30.06 that I could never get to shoot. I had sold it to a guy on consignment and I had never shot it. He came back asking me nicely what I could do. I cleaned it well, bedded it with a floated barrel. I tried 3 different off the shelf ammo in both 150 and 180 grains and it never shot well, so it became a 22" 35 Whelen that shoots great with 250 grain Swift A Frames.

BTW, Snyde... that is a sweet super grade. I've never seen a super grade featherweight.

I like the lightweight of my synthetic 220 Swift when I'm hiking, but love the mass of the 70 when I'm in position.

Pete
