Recently I found a small piece of a shrimp trawl after the storm. I think it’s polypropylene, but I’m not certain. I was surprised to feel how durable it feels. Until then, I’d only seen nylon and mono netting.

Any of you have experience with poly netting? How’s it hold up compared to nylon? It’s a lot cleaner and looks better, since it isn’t dipped in tar.

I’m asking, because if it’s durable, I’d sure make some nice hoop nets.

Thank you

It holds up very well, as long as you don’t leave it out in the sun for months at a time. I use very similar netting on the bottom of a mackerel brailer. I would say it will last at least twice as long as nylon. And I just don’t like mono.

Yup. Poly has less stretch and holds up much better to chafing. Not as strong as nylon and breaks down quicker from UV exposure.

Interesting. Good to know it holds up better to abrasion. UV is a killer. It’s very hard on nylon, so if it’s even worse on poly, that’s important to know.

Where do you buy it from? Is it sold only as a finished product, or do you have to make your own mesh webbing using small diameter poly rope?

I’ve searched a little online and haven’t found it offered as loose webbing yet

Not sure what size mesh you’d be looking for but maybe research shrimp trawl web. It’s out there. You won’t have to build it mesh by mesh. And of course poly floats, nylon sinks.
