Have a tempstar 2 stage condensing gas furnace. Almost 20 years old. Had repair tech out maybe 7 times an replace lot parts.but none in 5 yrs or had look at that long or 4 yrs. Or bit trouble, start up Monday nite. Bern on since set at 73, cold rainy, been run fine.i burnt some hamburger bsd last nite an fry pan is what think order I smell is from, on messy side. 3 house cats den up for few days. So I google about heat exchanger if crack an symptoms an formelhide order, I smell nothin out register when blow air, except dirty venting a little, I pretty sure I smell burnt fry pan an sniffles a little, if u had crack heat exchange, would u definately know something wrong or smell it for sure out register ? Not reslly interested in have furnace man out for $200 plus inspection for as little as do or trust one lot, az they like sell furnaces. Not unless broke down

You won’t smell anything if your heat exchanger is cracked. By a co detector and plug it in by your furnace, if you have a leak it will let you know. You may be smell dust that is burning off when you first start up your furnace for the year. It’s not very common for the heat exchanger to crack. As long as it’s running don’t let anyone try to sell you a new one. If it has lasted 20 years it’s probably built better than ones you get now.

The cats inside will carp first if you got a leek. Better get that freezer fixed so you got a place to store coon hides when you start buying them. You can always put a 55 gallon burn barrel in the house for heat. Just cut a hole in the roof so smoke will get out, kinda like a tee- pee.

You can often hear a cracked heat exchanger. Air will whistle through the crack, and will make a discernible sound. If you remove the outer panel ( deactivate the lid switches ), flames can be seen through the cracks.

In many areas, havc techs are required to notify the gas company and a faulty furnace will be red tagged until it is repaired.

I lost a friend because of a furnace with a rusted out heat exchanger, he and his wife thought they had the flu and both died. I would buy a carbon dioxide detector with a 20 year old furnace just to be safe. We had one rust through at our lake place and also at the Airport terminal that I managed. Scary stuff.

The first line of defence against carbon monoxide poisoning is making sure that your home’s heating equipment is being inspected on an annual basis: including gas appliances, chimneys and vents. CO alarms are a good second line of defence that should be installed on every level of the home and tested regularly. Also, you should never use grills, BBQs, or charcoal fuel burners in unventilated spaces, and keep your rooms well ventilated at all times.

Do you have natural gas? If so your local gas provider will check out your furnace for FREE.

Black hills energy won't check out ur furnace for free, I used have different service guard plans them an made good use it some years. But not worth it. Last 2 years I had replacement plan at $60 some month. Never use it once. So discontinue. A few years ago I got behind bill, didn't pay non utility portion of it or service guard for long time. An pay off now but I doubt get again, they charge like $200 for furnace inspection, or u got have better plan, used have silver plan at $40 some month, I don't hear a whistle noise. Look though vent holes on cover on front, I dont see flames shoot out, just reflection in 1 spot which normal, my co detecter don't work, out nee battery in it an chirps, never did buy new one. I would think u notice something. If stick face in register on smell, definately burnt fry pan ell, kitchen,i think cracked heat exchanger is rare. Or rusted out an air get though, don't hear whistle noise , maybe should buy new co detecter

I go buy new co 2 smoke detecter today, reading they last 5 years. The junk 1 I have is at least 20, discover odd smell is more burnt fry pan, new water bed mattress, not slept on it. Yet, out old conditioner in new water, old conditioner a little. Was plan sleep on it tomma nite, an see water level right before add more conditioner, water bed mattress. Wax give out odd ordor I think, if u get carbon monoxide, a co 2 smoke detecter. Well go off ?

I work for at an HVAC install and service company and I order the equipment and parts. We replace lots of heat exchangers. Not sure what a Tempstar warranty covers. Most manufacturers we deal with the heat exchanger is 20 years minimum, some go longer but only to the original home owner. Some cover labor as well. If it is cracked and not under warranty, it's usually a better deal to get a new unit.
