It's normal at the lake to see semi tame Mallards around at the lake sitting on the pier and sitting on the bottom of the shore stations. But there are 4 wood ducks hanging out feeding with the mallards and they don't spook when the neighbors walk out to their boat. I guess because of the drought has dried all the swamps up the wood ducks moved into the nearby lakes and were forced to be around people. But I don't remember seeing it before.

I bought a captive hatched pair of wood ducks in around 1997 at the Lucasville, Ohio Swap Meet. They were pinioned and permanently banded. They were about as tame as mallards and all the domestic mallard derivatives.

I would kind of like to have another pair of wood ducks or mandarins. They are beautiful. They taste good too.

We have a “Lake” in the town I work in thats next to a 4-lane road and surrounded on all sides by houses. This is the lake everyone goes to walk/exercise. It keeps your everyday tame park ducks and geese year round, but every Fall we’ll get coots, ringnecks, blue bills, redheads, and even buffleheads. I could catch any of them in a dipnet from the shore if I wanted. For some reason they get around those other ducks and forget they’re wild.
