Bought a used trailer that needed some work for $300. I figured I would just fix it up myself. Worked on the trailer all day yesterday and half a day today. Spent $670 on lights, lumber, bolts, nuts, safety chains, drill bits, and other stuff. I now have a trailer I could have bought for $800 and spent the weekend fishing instead.
When we were first married, almost 30 years ago, I bought a bar-b-q grill at an auction for $2. $100 dollars in parts later I had a grill that I could have sold for $25. This was probably my first of hundreds of similarly good deals.
I bought a used boat a couple of years ago. Spent all winter stripping it down to the hull and rebuilding it from the hull up. The project cost more than expected - as usual. Nickle and dime stuff all winter. I really have no idea what I spent. When it was done, I registered the VHF radio with the Coast Guard and needed a vessel name. My boat wasn't majestic enough to get a name but I needed one to fill in that line on the form. I asked my wife what I should name the boat. Without skipping a beat, she said "Two Dollar Grill". And that's how my boat got it's name.

I'm sure I'm kin as well. I figured I'd built my own log splitter to save money. You can already guess how that turned out. It's a good splitter!!! As a friend told his wife one time "we're gonna have to build another room onto the house to keep all that money you're saving!"
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

There's always the satisfaction of fixin something! Even if the duct tape and baling wire isn't attractive.

I'm glad to see others travel the same road ...I think the experience fixing something up is good, though. I won't even get into what it took for me to fix up a horse trailer , years ago....it looked great when I finished, BUT...... One thing that has been worth the money invested was updating my truck with new engine, etc. Since I take good care of my things, it was worth the funding I spent . With the cost of new ones , definitely worth it, and I have a safe , very well operating rig. Michael ( Scuba) , has that knack of fixing things up with as little cost as possible, and have them look great.

“Got a deal” and “This won’t take long to fix” Both those get me an eye roll from the wife.
