Anybody know for sure what this is? Gills taper and turn into stem. Smells a lot like oyster mushroom. Found in cluster on rotting Cottonwood stump.

Defiantly not a oyster!

Na, waggles right, not oyster.
Looks like some kind of Milk mushrooms I’ve seen on line. The big one was about 6”-8” across. Bunch of smaller ones around it.

If the gills run down the stem, it is a type of oyster, lets see the bottom. Just ate some off a cottonwood that looked like that on top. I was not joking.

I've never seen Oysters grow straight up like this and so symmetrical. Also waaayy bigger than any Oyster Ive seen. Definitely smells like Oyster though. I didnt pick them but they are just on other side of the river from me. If I go cut some wood later I'll get some better pics.

Look at the small one to the left of the big one by your hand, Those are oysters. The ones we got here were huge too. I would say where it grew was the reason it came out round because it wasn't on the side of a tree.

Thats a hunk off one of the big ones, the part I tore off to smell.

We had abut 4" of rain last week and cold after basically a hot drought, maybe it was the perfect storm for huge oyster mushrooms.

I am serious, I would pick them all and have a feast. We have not had enough rain here, still very dry.

How do you cook your Oyster shrooms Flipper?

I used to sprinkle with parm cheese and grill and they were awesome but that’s the only way I’ve had them.

I like to slice them in thin pieces and then flour them and fry them in butter. I wish I could have found the mess you did!

I didn’t make it back over there for a pic. Sure as heck wasn’t going to eat them till I got a positive ID but I’m not ruling out oysters, just never seen them that big. I’ll try tomorrow to at least flip em over and get a pic of bottom if their still there.

I've seen oysters that size and bigger, we called them elephant ears when I was a kid but they grew off the side of the tree like in flippers picture. I think he may be right too but I'd need to see the bottoms as well. There are several different types of oyster mushrooms. I have seen at least 5 different types in the woods here various times of the year too.

That’s exactly what I said to my son when I saw them “look, elephant ears”. Then when we got there I wasn’t so sure because of the shape, so symmetrical.

Got back over here this morning. Here’s some better pics. I’ve got some wood to cut then I’ll check back in and see if their worth hauling home or not.

They look like what we call boxelder mushrooms a type of oyster mushroom, in their later stages.
