Was finally able to set up a smoker for my hides! Super happy with the result! One more Buckskin to go and a hair on hide Iíll be trying, then on to my critters!. Excited for hunting/trapping seasons to start!

Nice! Is the smoke just for color?

Itís for waterproofing/resisting. It binds the fibers in place after the stretching so now when it gets wet I wonít have to rebreak/stretch it. If you donít smoke a hide after tanning it will turn to rawhide if it gets wet. smile

Great job something to be proud of for sure! Do you smoke both sides of it? Love the wood stove set up, I smoke my fish with a small wood stove piped into a small wooden she'd.

Thank you! I agree. This one was an egg yolk tan which turned out quite well but my other is brain tanned and it definitely makes a beautiful buckskin. Wanted to try both ways to compare and in case I get a hide from elsewhere. Iíll end up doing braintan for my deer for sure though. smile

Thank you! I really am proud. smile yes you smoke both sides, grain side first 30 mins to an hour then flip inside out and do flesh side for 20 mins or so. Weíve had the stove for years just sitting and it worked surprisingly well! I may use it with a shed to smoke some venison this year. smile

Good job. I have only tanned a couple smaller critters. Mostly with the orange bottle stuff. What do you plan to make with them?

BTW, I see you have the same hairdresser as my wife!

Thanks, Iím hoping to tan a few small critters that I have with the orange bottle stuff lol. I plan on making some clothes and maybe a bag or two with the buckskins. Once I finally get some coyotes and more deer hides Iím hoping to make a coyote fur lined buckskin jacket, probably full length.
BTW you wife has good taste in a hair dresser! laugh I do my own but still. Lol

Thanks! The brain tan definitely makes a softer skin but it smells funky for a bit. The egg yolks worked great. So Iíll probably still do both depending on how many brains I can get ahold of. Lol
