At the lake cabin they built a nest under the eaves. When I went out the back door I got stung 3 times in the back. I had some nice welts that took about a week to go away. I got a can of wasp & hornet killer and they are no more.

I've seen several bald face hornet's nests but they were all on buildings or in trees. Did you actually see the hornets that stung you? In the ground sounds like yellow jackets which can nail you pretty good too. But then, there's always a first time for everything.

I had a nest of what looked like bald faced hornets under a railroad tie in my raised bed garden this year. I have seen them in the ground other times as well.

Here we call those little ones that live in the ground and sting like he!! Yellow jackets,or sweat bees. Those big fearsome looking things are called bald face hornets.I've seen where people called the ground dwellers bald face,I think it's a regional thing.

I delt with 2 ground hives and 2 paper Wasp hives I have to deal with paper wasps every year. They have a tendency to build under the railings on my deck. They can really sting too!

Stand off a ways and watch to find the entrance. Then after dark cover it with powdered Sevin. Be aware they will fly at night towards a light though.

Ammonia in a hand sprayer, pumped up and ready when it's dark and all are on the nest... Then stick the nozzle in the ground and turn the juice on. Nighty night kids.
Cheap and easy. Have done it MANY times.

Lol....reminds me of when I was about 15yo. My parents had a line of blue spruce trees along the driveway about 15ft tall. The one on the end before the street had acquired a white faced hornets nest about the size of a basketball. As a 15yo boy I HAD to mess with it......lol One day when my parents were not home , got a friend to help me. I got on my bicycle with a running gas weed eater in my lap. Rode down the driveway to the street at a decent clip. As I reached the tree with the hornets nest I reached out with the weed eater and pulled the throttle wide open as I hit the nest. My friend was on the property on the other side of the street watching for cars. The nest got destroyed instantly. I continued riding my bike into the neighbor's driveway on the other side of the street as my friend ducked for better cover. There was instantly a huge cloud about 15 feet in diameter of really ticked off hornets near the hive was located. We went way , way around this by a 300ft circle to my dad's lawn shed in my backyard. Got a sprayer that fit the garden hose and filled the bottle with SEVIN. Sprayed the cloud from almost 40ft away. Some of the things actually followed the stream back to me but kept from getting bit. The next couple days my mom noticed the thousands of dead hornets by the tree. Asked me if I knew anything. I knew nothing.......
