It has been 30 years since I hunted in North Dakota. Because I ain't getting any younger,I am trying to do get in at least one more good hunting outing.
So my son in law and eldest grand son are heading for North Dakotas waterfowl opener in 2 weeks.
I was wondering if any of you guys from that area can help guide me to some private land to hunt. I Love hunting over decoys and prefer private ground where you can keep a decoy spread out for a few days. It has been a lot of years since I have put out a good string of decoys,to me half the fun of Waterfowl hunting was watching the decoy spread.
Any in put would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck. With the Canadian border closed, tons of non-residents have already been beating down doors asking for geese and the upcoming ducks. The local farmers have been telling both new resident requesters and non-resident requesters alike to beat feet.

Never gave a thought to Canada being closed, and how it would affect going to North Dakota.

Sure has freed up a lot of land up here with the boarder closed now till 26 Oct 2020.
We have had good luck over in the corner of MB/Sask/ND along the edge of the Clark -Sayler Wildlife management reserve Highway 83 in Canada/USA boarder
There was a Whooping Crane on Monday over there so that may effect Crane hunting now.

I guided in N.D. for many yrs, your going way to early. Residents hunter will be hunting the local duck for a week before get there. And most likely will blow them out of the state. To me there opening season to early as all the ducks are still brown.

Good luck with your hunt. In between Wishek and Ashley and Kulm can be real good.

ND waterfowl has turned into a circus.

Can’t imagine what it will be like this year with Canada closed.

Getting old so I am trying to make sure I get in one last--good hunt.Wanted to go early, because later in season can be iffy and also runs into trapping season. I am also trying to get in one more season of chasing the water rodents.Missed the last couple of years with a torn miniscus--which now seems to have healed.
Hopefully not all the farmers are negative feeling, and I can find one who reacts positively. I know 30 years ago,all the farmers were very positive towards us,but I can see how it can now be a real pain for them. I only wish I had taken names and numbers from them 30 years ago and kept in touch. I am sure most of them from that time period are now resting behind the pearly gates.

Here is a sign from a property near Wishek. Things have changed for Non-residents hunting in ND over the years and not for the better IMO!

What I have heard from sportsmen and some farmers in the area is MN hunters have ruined it for them. I've had the same experience in Montana with MN outdoorsman. In fact just 2 weeks ago.

Knock on doors but DO NOT mention you're from Wisconsin in that area... trust me!

Snowy --you are negative on anything MN,and always have been--so I pay no attention to anything you say.Because I feel you are full of--well you know the rest.

The farther west you get from Ashly the more you are out of the prime waterfowl ground and should see less hunters. There is far less pressure in that area early in the season then there will be later when the migration starts. Bring a small gift for landowners you hunt on and it will go a long way in opening up ground.
This time of year with migration not started yet I wouldn’t recommend staying in any location longer then a day, real easy to blow the local ducks off and you won’t see much action after initial hunt.
Tons of public, so with a little scouting you should be able to find something.

I was planning on bringing something for the farmers that are willing to share their land with me. Being a trapping supply dealer,I won't bring trapping items, but I was thinking of bringing the elbow length choppers and an assortment of deerskin and cowhide gloves. I like them and figured a land owner would too.

BRING CHEESE.

The ranchers wives don't wear gloves but they love cheese. A 5Lb block of cheese got me a lot of trapping ground when I knocked on doors.

I used to hunt North Dakota every year. mostly up in the Willow City area I always had a cooler full of cheese and bags of apples. Went a long way getting permission.

The last few years I was out there I saw a rapid increase in land leased by guides. I had the best hunts on areas owned by the landowner's friends and relatives, though.

When not duck hunting we would hunt Sharptails which was really a blast.
