I've heard that beaver will not or will seldom push through a colony trap door. I do know however that the swim-through traps work very well for beaver.

There's a thread or two archived on this.

I've got a youtube video of using one I made. I think the key is to have a triggered door for the initial beaver. and preferably a spring loaded door as well. They will shove the trap out of the run if they don't go through it.

I use a triggered swim through cage, many times there will be two beaver in them. I feel the first one gets caught and the second pushes the door open and is caught.

Interesting. I have caught two at a time quite often but I have always felt it was a matter of them hitting the trap at the same time or within a few seconds of each other. I have experimented with plexiglass doors, different size wire doors, and various different camouflaged doors (aquatic vegetation or sticks) and I can not get a beaver to enter a trap with a closed door by any method. I have built some stuff that would make you giggle!

I think water clarity played a big part too. Clear water and things tend to get frustrating for beaver and rats

We have no clean water here, everything is silty. Beaver in the canals/ditches here tend to swim on the bottom no matter were they are going.

Indians used nets to catch beaver-outlawed now.Too deadly.
Dont see why a colony trap wouldnt work, just not practical for most beaver trappers because of bulk.
They would be a nightmare under ice.

Especially when the beaver you didn't catch shove the trap out if the run and you have to try to find it again. They get cabled off now.

Plus can you imagine the size of the hole you would have to cut in the ice to pull up a colony trap with 5 or 6 beaver in it?

Well down here my ice is 2 inches. If we get a real deep freeze we could get 6
