Do not know, but intrigued now. Did run across a cool sounding trapping museum ran by Tom Parr in Ohio while I did some research on your question though. Possibly they might have some knowledge about your question.

very old......been reading about coloring traps for 60 yrs from older guys like arnold ...ej daily and others. Got my first logwood from old stanley hawbaker senior 52 yrs ago or so. Sent it to a kid free. After that I started painting connibears.

Some of the research I’ve done and read is that the old time method was to smoke the traps.

Dying metal with tannin to retard rusting came about when blacksmithing started.It was done on things like hinges etc even before traps were invented.
