X5 Yes excellent read. Thanks for sharing as well.
I could feel that ranchers pain and heartache in the words he wrote. Ranching is hard enough, adding bureaucracy and trash science to the mix is horrible. That's a terrible feeling when it's something you love.

Very few realize how hard it is to produce beef when you are fighting the unseen forces of the EPA, bunny & tree huggers, and the BLM (Bureau of Land Management). Now throw in the ridiculous state agencies that are all powerful (and knowledgeable not so much) that ride herd over farmers and ranchers in such places as Cali & Oregon and it is nearly an impossible task.
The writer seems to savy what is going on and why these preventable fires are not being prevented. Thank you for posting Krug- I doubt CNN will carry these folks story and this may be the only place we find it.
Otherwise it will be wall to wall- fires caused by global warming and cheeto man bad crap

Fire is the great renewer! I feel that ranchers pain, but he talks like the mountains are gone, and that couldn't be further from the truth. Yes the trees are gone, and a lot of the wildlife, but it will be back. This whole country burned nearly every year, before it was settled. What happened when a lightning strike became a forest fire in the mountains.....they burned till they went out on their own. The great plains was set afire by the natives to bring the buffalo back, nearly every spring. They would come to the new green grass. If people burned more often, there would be less fuel, and smaller and less destructive fires.
I grew up in the flint hills of Ks, and still live here. We burn a lot of country every spring to keep the cedar trees and brush down. As time goes on, the city folks complain that they are getting smoke, so stricter enforcment of burning keeps being pushed. This country will turn to brush and trees in ten years, and then you have to physically cut the trees and bush hog the brush to have any grass for the cows. People not close to the land do not understand that, and a lot of ranchersout west futher are so scared of fire, that they won't consider a controlled burn! Quite a dilemma for the land users these days.....and not gonna get any better soon!
