Was lucky enough to get one of Lee Stienmeyers custom made parallel fleshing knives today. He did an incredible job building it and I can't wait to start peeling things!

I got one a few months ago, it's almost too pretty to use. It is top notch quality. Very impressed.

You are a lucky man ! I'm going to have to break down and get myself One of Lee's knives .Always hear good reports on them , they look like a quality product . I have been using a necker 600 for about 30 years , no complaints about it just would like to try something new .

I have been wanting a fleshing knife for years, I bought one last year. I tried it on a cat hide cut a hundred dollar hole within the first two minuites now it hangs on the wall in my fur shed. As I flesh my fur the old fashioned way I thank the lord I have the wisdom to leave it hanging on the wall. For me blood blisters, time and sweat makes more money than using my high dollar fancy fleshing knife.

Catpincher, I always tell people three things when buying a knife. 1) Go slow and get the feel of a new knife before you dive in! 2) Save the sharp edge for the tough stuff. There are a lot of critters you won't need the sharp edge for....ever! 3) Always repair any cuts or nicks you make in a skin. A lot of pelts will go from being bad damage to a slight or no damage by using a careful sewiing up of the hole. Fur out furs will go though with no damage if done carefully. That knife isn't doing you any good hanging on the wall!

What are some of the pros/cons of fleshing with the wide blade vs. the 1.5"? I have a new necker and just don't think it's all that it's cracked up to be. Im wanting to order one of Lee's this week and am leaning towards the parallel knife.

I think it's all just preference. My husband prefers the wide bladed fleshing knives and I hate them, lol. For me, they just seem heavy and awkward to maneuver. I like the lighter weight and flexibility of the narrow bladed knives.

Angela is spot on. I usually tell folks that stay with what you learned on.....if your happy with it. The Parallel is easier to run and faster , considering you just flip to go from side to side. Plus it is safer to run! It's easy to bump yourself with that sharp edge when your in a hurry, swapping sides on hat english style knife.

Edit: That first sentence I was not clear on. Not talking about staying with the knife you learned on, but the style of the knife you learned on!

After 5 1/2 decades of fur harvesting I can say I have used every method of working fur one can think of.
The list of fleshing knives is long and next to my antique draw knife the two of Lee's knives I have are far above anything I have tried.
Like Lee said, when starting, proceed with caution. Get to know anything you are working with and and establish a solid base of
knowledge and experience before going full bore!
