Today is Indiana's deer opener. We start off with a 2 day youth season the weekend before bow season starts.

This morning my wife sat with my 10 year old and I with my 8 year old. Just at first light I heard a shot but thought it was on another farm. That suppressor on the youth model 7mm08 not only reduces recoil and makes it sound about like a.22mag it really makes it tough to tell where the shot comes from.

The shot was my 10 year old and he shot a small 4 point he thought was a doe. So after my wife text and let me know I sat for about 30 min with my 8 year old and just before I told him it was time to rap it up he turned to me and said maybe we should go its getting hot out and we probably need to work on my brother's deer. I was so proud of him at that moment.

On the walk back toward the house I looked up and saw two deer at 100 yards. I told him to shoot if he could get a good rest and make a good shot. Bang flop. The other deer ran off but within a few min came back. Bang it ran into the fence bounce off ran back about 15 yards and went down. Two good shots esp for an 8 year old.

My 10 year old is up to 8 deer now and the 8 year old is at 4. They can't wait to go again this evening but I all ready have 3 in the cooler on ice to process now. Plus if they will be light on tags for our county if they fill then all now. I guess if they do we will just have to drive and hunt other counties and across the river to KY.

Ky youth season is the 2nd weekend of October they shot 3 down there last season. Would have been 4 but I made them let the last one walk because we had enough and it was the last evening before a 3 hr drive home..

I just wanted to share our blessed hunt to get your blood pumping and wish everyone a safe and productive season.

They help with what they can. I let them cut the tendons and silver skin off the grind meat and cube it and the stew meat. They can probably tell you how to skin and quarter one but just aren't strong enough yet. If it weren't for the heat and having 3 deer to get on ice I would have let then each try gutting.

Is so much better watching them be successful. I would rather watch them shoot a yearling than me shoot a 200" buck. Well unless I could sell it for a 5-6 figure amount. Then I could use the money to take the kids on a western hunt maybe elk.

But yes it's a lot of work and I'm out of shape and am feeling it.

Good deal neighbor!! I'm glad you all had some luck this morning! I took my 15 year old brother, we saw a buck briefly but was unable to get a shot. Great job!
