Just curious on what people think about muskrat floats. I built mine to hold 2 traps on each side of the pole hole in the middle. On the sides i used 2×2s as kind of a wall. Will that be enough of a wall to keep them from climbing over the side to get the bait (which im thinking about placing on the stabilizing pole)? I want to funnel them so they have to walk over the trap. Any suggestions on trap size or wall height? I have a dozen #1 coil springs and a dozen long springs.

I never worried about wall height just make them high enough so the trap won't get knocked off. It's all about making the platform just big enough to hold the trap or traps. This gives the rat no place to step but on the trap. Most floats I see pictured on this forum look pretty neat but they are WAY to big. The thing I feel you need to do Is have the bait at least 6" above the trap. That way the rat has to get on the float and has to stand up on It's hind feet to reach the bait. And hind foot catches are what you want.

I 1/2s or even 1.75s or those #2 vic square jaws make great rat traps.

Mine have just a little 10" strip of 1/2" on each side to keep the trap centered, and if I build a few more I'll shorten the float to 16" long. A pole can go through the center or you can tether it to a pole.
