I did some window shopping in Fairbanks today, specifically looking for a 7mm08 for my daughter's caribou hunt next year. Lots in 6.5 Creedmore, few in 7mm08. Ballistics, as printed on ammo boxes, look similar, though 6.5 slightly lighter and faster. Hunting partner shoots .264 Win mag, and is not particularly satisfied with it, and that seems similar to 6.5 Creedmore. Anybody have any hunting experience with 6.5Creedmore? I'd guess our caribou are about the size of a mule deer buck. Thanks.

I've not hunted with either caliber but I love the .284 diameter bullets and calibers that shoot them both are lite recoil guns but if it were me I'd go with the .7mm-08 or your name sake a .30-06

caribou are not hard to knock down. 7mm08 should work real good!120-140 grain bullets. i liked my 25-06 on them.

My son shot his first moose, a spike-fork, with a 7mm-08 I gave him for a graduation present.

I like the cartridge enough that I bought one of my own, a Cooper M54 Excalibur.

Get the 6.5. Bullets have higher B.C's and S.D.'s. Ammo is everywhere and a lot better selection. In the field on game I doubt you will ever notice a difference on game.

Your splittin hairs between the 2. Pick the best bullet for the job. same weight bullet 6.5 will shoot flatter and penetrate a little farther.

I don't think that .020" is going to make a difference. Bullet construction relative to velocity and shot placement for the win !

A .243 can work well for a smaller stature person. It helps for the nervous jerk with the rifle reaction. Plenty of ammo available.

Thanks all. She already shoots .243, but I'd rather have something a bit bigger. I don't reload. There was lots of factory ammo at shop for both. I read a lot of reviews and threads on other forums last night too. It'll probably get down to the rifle she prefers.

I don't need a 6.5 now. My 7-08 does anything I need. Also have 25-06, 270, and 280 so that bullet range is covered. Never under estimate the ability of a 7-08 on thin skinned game like deer.

what would you take on a bear or moose hunt?

that in a rifle that really fits her possibly fitted with a muzzle brake.

If she shoots the 243 good then I would use it. A whole bunch of moose killed every year in ontario with 243. Preferred caliber by many of the locals. If it works well on moose, it will do fine on Caribou. As with anything, proper bullet bullet weight and construction...I would recommend the Barnes Vortex or similar. Good luck to her on her hunt..!

I have shot a pile of caribou and with a 6mm Rem.Either of those calibers would be good-I would pick 7mm-08 if it were me but I also reload everything I shoot-if you don't probably the creed moor. I always worry about smooth feeding with the steep shoulder of the creedmoor-so nah I would choose the 7mm-08

The local emporium had a half-dozen different loads for each on their shelves, about 4 of each were hunting loads. Plenty of boxes of each. Has that been your experience in your areas?

That 264 win mag of your hunting partners should be ideal. I’ve taken several elk with mine.
